Well what a let down that was, waiting all summer and then drop points to a team we'd normally score half a dozen against. Hadn't realised we had so many players missing until i got to the ground and saw on the screen the bench, fucking hell! The result was poor, the most damaging aspect of the game was probably not the 2 points dropped at home but losing Carrick for at least 2 weeks. Once he went off (thank fuck we equalised before he did go off) we looked pretty clueless, in part because of a shit substitution by Fergie in putting O'Shea in midfield. Every substitution after that was used to get him out of midfield without taking him off. What the fuck was that 'More goals' shite all about? Next we'll be having people walking along the sidelines with applause signs! #shakehead# Thought Campbell did ok as did Fletch. Rooney flagged in the second half and needs games. Goes without saying now that we need Anderson, Nani and Hargreaves back as soon as possible. Here's hoping a few of them are back for the next home game... a champions league group game against Standard Liege. ;D

Well that was a frustrating day. Didn't show up really and I don't think most of the fans did either. No atmosphere at all and, as always, the Newcastle fans were excellent. The game itself was pretty good for the neutral but fuck them. We were poor today. With the players we had out, you knew it wouldn't be a stroll, especially with Tevez out too, but in the last 15 minutes I had a feeling we would get a winner but sadly I was wrong. Passing was terrible today, didn't create enough decent chances, Van Der Sar looked shaky and the experienced players didn't seem to lift the younger players we had in. Having said that, Campbell was good today and my choice for man of the match, for us anyway. He just needs a bit of bulking up. Fair play to Newcastle too because they had a good go and deserved there point.

Not the season opener I had hoped for especially against Newcastle who I thought we'd do well against. Portsmouth hasn't been playing well but we'll be facing them on home ground and surely we won't look too intimidating after today's showing. I'm sure once we have our regulars back we'll start performing but I think this season the level of consistency will once again be a big factor so we can't afford too many of these displays.

Well not what we wanted certainly, but remember how last season started then ended? ;D I think a key point was Carrick's injury so early on. Just need to pull together for the next few games while players are recovering from injury. I think if Tevez had played today, we would have won comfortably. He was the player in pre-season who looked the sharpest and he was missed. Also, if the chances in the 1st half had been taken, we were looking at another possible 6-0 but Newcastle were lucky today. I don't think anyone's mentioned Ronaldo yet? Well he's a United player and we need him back ASAP. Not only can he supply the goals, he can make space for the other forwards (there was very little today) to go through on goal.
However, it was good to be back at Old Trafford.

Frustrating. The message from the fans before the game was score more goals, and we were too defensive. Didnt even have any attacking players on the bench. Scholes had a downer and these are the times when we need guys like Anderson to come off the bench and change the game. Can't exactly do that when he's miles away in Beijing. Oh well, should have been better, but could have been worse. Let's put on a Champions display against Pompey.

Pissed. Off.
The only thing that cheered me up was Frazier Campbell's performance.

disappointing result, but with nani, tevez, anderson, hargreaves, carrick and ronaldo being injured (im not counting saha, he's barely ever in the squad anymore), it wasnt gonna be easy against newcastle. they've improved since last season...they looked fit and had a real go of it.
frazier campbell did well, inexperience showed abit with his decision making and link up with rooney, but that will change with time. as for rooney, i'm sure he'll come good, he's just recovered from a virus and clearly isnt that match sharp, but he was still all over the pitch giving 100%.
we've been in this situation before where we don't start the season well and go on to do great things. let's just get behind the team and hope they push for better results.

The headlines on Sporting Life this morning read: "Blues new title favourites" FFS, after one game!! Of course we all want to win all of the time, but putting this performance into perspective it was a badly depleted team doing the best it could under the circumstances. We now need to be put it behind us and move on to the next game as there's a long season ahead.

i think rooney and campbell did really really well. they tried and tried and tried but they performed at there best. the rest wasn't a team that could win anything.
was it just me or did anyone else also think that we could have played on a field with a width of 5 meters? i think, like anyone else, that fergie is the best manager but giggs and fletscher always wanted to be in the center?
why do we play 4-4-2 if we just have 2 midfielders? i would've prefered a 4-3-3 with carrick scholes fletscher in midfield and giggs-campbell-rooney up front, especially against a team that we normally outplay.
all in all, i don't think we lose the league with the first game.
cheers

I really do not know how the hell can fans like johnyboy still say that we dont need a new striker. What difference would berbatov have made today? He would have ripped that newcastle defence apart with rooney if he was in our team. That was the only difference he would have made.

I think Berbatov would have made a bigger impact in yesterday's game if he had joined earlier (is he joining?). Campbell did well but lack the experience. Rooney had to do a lot of back tracking and wasn't getting enuff decent chances to score. He would have done better if he were to link up with a more established striker (we didn't expect Tevez to miss out on the match anyway). We can't expect Rooney to do a Maradona and dribble past the whole of Newcastle's defence.
Anyway, 1st game of the season, we didn't play badly. Just not up to our usual standards. There's no point panicking and one thing positive about the match is that our kids looked comfortable playing in the first team.
Get a new striker in by this week followed by the return of our players, and it's all sorted out.

Really poor start and I hope Carrick can recover quickly enough. Thought fans weren't as vocal as they should have been cos I could still hear the Newcastle fans...although I'm glad they didn't do the "Shoes off if you love the Toon!" shite Here's a piccy of the banner, well...two of the three words anyway

Certainly not the result or performance that many on here were looking for; however, we do have to put it into perspective.
1. United had the following players unavailable - Tevez, Ronaldo, Nani, Park, Saha, Anderson, Hargreaves, and Foster. 2. Carrick and Giggs got injured during the match. 3. O'Shea replaced Carrick as the creative central midfielder. Not his most effective position if the truth be told. 4. Newcastle were much improved from last season; certainly in defence. 5. Rooney is not fully fit. 6. We started poorly last season. 7. We were clearly missing a poacher in front of goal.
It could have been a lot worse. Take into account that Newcastle were also missing Owen and Viduka; oh and Barton of course!
Carrick is now out for 2-3 weeks and Giggs has a calf strain; there's 2 more players who will not figure against Pompey next Monday. We'll be putting out the reserves next! Park, Hargo, and Anderson MAY be available next week, but don't hold your breath.
However, our season doesn't really start until September 13th when we visit Anfield. One has to hope that with the exception of Ronaldo we'll have a full complement.
A poor start, but let's wait until we've played the dippers and chavs before sinking into a pit of despair.

Was great to be back inside OT however, was a bit of an anti climax. One plus to come from it was the performance of Campbell. Personally for all the effort thought Rooney was poor, and wasted the ball, but it was nice to see him having a go from outside the box like days gone by! Think it goes without saying that we need a striker, but at the end of the day, even with a depleated side, the man of the match was their keeper, so it says it all really!
