Well, we were so good in qualifying but I hope it was just experimenting and injuries.
He had to take Barry because we have no cover. Carrick out of form, Huddlestone and Parker - inexperienced and/or not good enough and the best man for the job, Hargreaves, has been out for nearly 18 months. It was clear he tried to get alternatives, Fergie told him Hargreaves would not be up for it before Capello selected his Mexico squad, he asked Scholes out of retirement. What other options does he have, he had to take Barry.
I thought Walcott would steal a place on the plane but there is no good reason for him to go really, Capello's well within his rights to not let him go, Shaun Wright Phillips did alright against Japan on the left and is a good substitute against tired legs because he has an end product more of the time than Walcott.
A. Johnson - see Parker + Huddlestone.
Darren Bent was introduced too late in the game, he had tried to get Zamora in but his achilles ruled him out completely. Bent doesn't offer the ability of holding up the ball that Heskey and to a lesser extent Crouch offer. In a 4-4-2 we have 2 replacements. Rooney + Crouch/Heskey. Defoe is Rooney's cover and Heskey and Crouch cover for each other. Darren Bent does not warrant a place above Defoe but simply is not cover for either Crouch or Heskey.
I don't think Gerrard should be dropped, but I think in a 4-5-1 should interchange with Joe Cole as an CAM/LM. He has not had a good season but is better than the other midfielders still and has played quite well for England. I don't have any problems with the squad he picked really, I don't hate SWP, but I don't love him, but he's cover for Lennon. I think there must have been reasoning for Warnock over Baines because he seemed to have preferred Baines in all the recent friendlies so maybe there was a problem there. He showed loyalty to Heskey and Upson due to their qualifying performances and they are tried and trusted to work.
I think our qualifying performances were much better than Sven ever got us playing and we are slightly better at defending set pieces, but not good yet (That 2-2 with Sweden in 2006 was a horror show in how to defend set pieces).
