fabio was preferred at the business end of last season to rafael at right back though wasn't he. rafael was fit as far as i know.
i'm not ruling out rafael can become our long-term first choice RB, i've just got a nagging feeling that he might not.

I can see one of the Twins probs Rafeal being pushed forward into midfield soon. I thought we were sorted at RB for years but in defence you need a settled back line & lets be honest both of the twins are made from glass & suffer from a lack of positional awareness, Obviously CM is main concern and has been for years.

Has to be a creative midfielder, defensive midfielder and LB. Possibly a RB as well as we have no consistency in that position and Smalling and Jones are both long term CB's.
In a dream world it'd be Modric, M'Vila and Alba / Izaguirre.
DDG
Rafael Smalling Vidic Alba / Izaguirre
M'Vila
Modric Cleverley
Nani Rooney
Welbeck
That really could be a team that could challenge Barca with pace, energy and creativity, I'm dreaming though...

I think Rafael will nail down the RB position once he gets rid off injuries plus there are allways Smalling, Jones and even Tony. We should be looking more into the LB situation and of course our midfield - retire Giggs, offload Gibson and one of Carrick/Fletcher, bring in a DM and a creative player like Modric and give Pogba a real chance in PL....

In a dream world it'd be Izaguirre. Oh Christ, not this again. No. Just no. If people are hell bent on thinking of left-backs, here: Sakho, Cissokho, Marcel Schmelzer from Dortmund. You'll either know them already or not. If not look them up. They're all class and already streets better than Emilio FECKING Izaguirre. THERE ARE NO PLAYERS FROM THE SPL THAT COULD GO STRAIGHT INTO THE MANCHESTER UNITED FIRST TEAM.* * The only chance of a player from the SPL being good enough would be if we took a punt on a youngster for the future, but I can't think of anyone who fits into that category.

Addendum: Steven Davis would do a better job for us than Giggs, Carrick, or Anderson right now. He's a class apart for Northern Ireland but he should not be good enough to start for us every week beside Cleverley.

The only worry I have about the twins is their seeming inability to remain fit for any length of time. Rafael has the odd inopportune moment in him, but also the sublime, and more than enough talent to make the job his own. IF, Bestie's growing pains theory is correct I am prepared to hold that position open for him while his body catches up. If he's going to be perma-crocked then we need to start looking for a permanent replacement. I'd start with Herr Lahm at Bayern and work my way down from there.
As for the midfield...hopefully we don't have to do much as we've already done the business in January. I'm past the point of caring if players are cup-tied or not as we've got bigger fish to fry than the CL for one season. I'm probably over-reacting because I'm also ready to abandon any aversion to panic buying or value in the market or whether a player is "United quality" or the next ___________ . Bastian Schweinsteiger would be ideal, although unrealistic. Mario Goetze or Kagawa from Dortmond would do nicely. Paying too much for Hamsik or Eden Hazard wouldn't bother me in the slightest either. Knowing we avoided overpaying for Nasri or his agent didn't help me feel any better Sunday night, so what's the use.
Hell, at this rate, I'd be fine with arranging a secret meeting with Wenger and swapping our scouting reports on potential defenders with his potential midfielders because I'm starting to believe we're never going to sign another midfielder again...ever.
[edit] GAAAHHHHH!!!......yup...still pissed!

Mamadou Sakho. Good call. I know he can play LB but isnt he more of a CB?

Id rather him than Iza -whatever.
Id rather bring Irwin out of retirement than him.
Celtics left back? And people give out about fergie trying to find unknown gems rather than buy proven talent.....
Id rather go potless for a few seasons and give a few of the youngsters a chance. The last decent player to come out of Celtic was Choccy - and he technically wasnt a product of their youth system either
EDit: Sakho?? Yes please....that will do

Bit naive to write off a player because he plays in the SPL. Sakho is primarily a CB, be daft to spend a considerable amount of money on him when we have Jones and Smalling. Cissokho is decent but his defending can be suspect. Hardly seen Schmelzer play so can't really comment on him.

No, ive seen Celtic play plenty of times and he is not United quality.
Id rather bring in someone who can cover another position too if necessary - especially given our injury problems over the past couple years.
Versatility - or the fact he cant play on the left - is one of the reasons why some dont rate Valencia. Its a part of the game now, so the fact Sakho is "primarily" a CB is irrelevant. If Fergie buys him and "primarily" plays him at LB then he will be a LB. just because PSG dont play him there regularly doesnt mean he cant or shouldnt do it.

I watch the SPL on a weekly basis and Iazguirre is no-where near United quality. He's nowhere near Aston Villa quality. (For an example of a middle of the road club with a half-decent laft back.)
My point about the SPL is that, as a regular viewer, I know that there are approximately zero players in that league who would be good enough to play in our first team and be first choice. Allan McGregor on a good day, maybe. Steven Davis, but only by comparison to our current midfield options and because I've also seen him play at international level. And no, I haven't just said those two because they play for Rangers. I'll happily go the other way and say, for example, that Naismith (one of the best players, is shite).
Sakho is both a centre-back and a left-back. I knew someone would mention that. A player is allowed to have two natural positions you know, he can play either to the same level.

He's isn't naturally a left back, nor will he ever be in the future. He'll be a CB for both club and country. Either way, I think it's highly unlikely we'll see him at United anyway. I think Alba's the best bet currently.
