I've never seen him play, but it's allways nice to be linked with young talent. How good is he lads - for that kind of money at 17 I expect he must be almost young Wayne Rooney special. I would rather we go all out and try to get Goetze...

I just watched some clips of Barkley on youtube - he looks class, two footed, great vision, some great passing and only 17.

Bayern are tapping the dickens out of Goetze at the moment, so that just about rules us out.

I always worry that English talent wont ever be as good Technically as foreign. I do like the look of Barkley though. Not worth the £20 Million branded about. He's only played 3/4 first team games. £10 Million maybe £15 at a push.

From what I've seen, I think hes worth £20m, especially to stop Chelsea getting him (not that that should be our transfer policy, but if big rivals are in for a player it makes it more important we tie up a deal). You're paying for potential, and of course there's a risk he won't fulfil that, but every transfer is a risk. By January we may have a better idea of whether he is indeed worth that sort of fee, but at the end of the day a player is worth whatever a team is willing to pay for him.

Plus there's less chance of them staying out of the sunny clutches of Madrid and Barcelona.

We've done pretty well playing with 6 English players, 4 of which are around 20. Either way you judge them on an individual basis, nationality should only be a tiny factor. I haven't seen any of this Barkely lad, part from youtube. Henderson was getting good reviews this time last year though which tempers my enthusiasm somewhat. But there a few months yet before January and surely if theres was any truth to the summer rumours we should have around ~£25mill available for a midfielder and Everton are still skint. Hopefully we'll see a bit more of him.

I was speaking to an old guy at the pub the other day and he was ranting on about how the future for English football is looking bleak, I was on other end of the scale and am fairly optimistic about the next few years.
Hart, Smalling, Jones, Richards, Baines, Cahill, Dawson, Walker, Wilshire, Cleverley, Oxlade-Chamberlain, McEachran, Barkley, Rodwell, Henderson, Johnson, Young, Sturridge, Carroll, Welbeck, Rooney
Sure I've forgot some, that's just players off the top of my head but it's a potentially a top top squad of players.

Carroll's toss. There's also Sinclair, Morrison, Tunnicliffe, Livermore, Rose, Bertrand. Glenn Johnson's still fairly young too. And with the Fair Play rules coming in, there's going to be a few more kids given a chance, which is one of the best things about the fair play laws. Assuming they work.

I'm actually pretty optimistic about the future. just look at the personnel we've had playing, 6 English players all under 26. You have a core, swap Ando for Wilshere and hopefully have Walcott find another level and were pretty good. Decent selection of defenders around, Harts the best goalie we've had since seaman imo.
Then there all the name that have been mentioned beyond that. Sturridge could be a good player if he gets enough chances at chelsea. I dont see how this decade will be worse than last.
