All our transfer dealings are dodgy. Have been since the late 80's. What others spring to mind, tatty? Not wanting to tarnish our rep or anything, just genuinely interested. I'm not sure dodgy is the right word, but United transfers certainly have little conscience and will do pretty much anything on the right side legal. A recent example (though not a 100% confirmed) is that Phil Jones release clause was not your typical one and that it was actually 'hidden' on the contract. Unlike your typical Spanish one which is meant to be very public, it was meant to be a secret. Yet oddly enough United came in with an offer that matched it to the penny. That was the reason the owners kicked up the best fuss they could for a weekend but the deal had to go through. There certainly a bit going on the behind the scenes with Mendes. I'll let you draw your conclusions from the Bebe deal. The facts- We signed him unscouted and unwatched by Fergie, which was a first. We paid a fair sum, ~£7mill for someone who'd moved for around 400k a month earlier. Mendes took a cut of about £3.5million of the deal. Surely it was with the intention to keep him well onside. The De Gea deal was shady in that the deal had been struck before Mendes even became his agent. All parties had to deny it till he officially took over and the deal went through, worst kept secret of last summer. In regards to Gaitan, well it could be a realistic move. Or more cynically, Football Journo's have cottoned on to name drop Mendes to make Utd based transfers seem more likely. I have made comments about United using Mendes and Portugal as a possibly proxy to instigate deals for South Americans, after all English teams do have our new regs on third party ownership since the Tevez/West Ham debacle of a few years back. Thats purely my supposition though.

"The interest of big clubs is not affecting my head, I am calm about the rumours about Manchester United," Gaitan told O Jogo.
"I am not desperate to be sold. I am very comfortable in Benfica because we are an excellent team and the people are happy with me.
"If, eventually, no concrete offers appear, it's not a problem."

Manchester United have launched a second bid believed to be around £20m for Benfica star Nico Gaitan, according to sources in Portugal. Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to sign Gaitan having been impressed with his performances for Benfica. Gaitan has been scouted for well over a year and it was recently suggested that United had a £16m opening bid turned down. Benfica remain aware of United's interest in Gaitan and face a fight to hold on to him this summer, with Ferguson trying to push a deal through early. The front page of Portuguese newspaper Record claims United have made an improved offer of around £20m for Gaitan, 24. Gaitan can play on the wing or centrally and Manchester City have also expressed an interest in him. But Ferguson and United's determination to land the Argentina international has made them favourites to land him when the transfer window opens. www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/120322/reports-man-united-launch-second-bid-benfica-star-165653

He looks ok, but didn't really set the world on fire in the two games against us. I would rather throw that kind of money at Goetze/Hazard/Neymar .... I'd tend to agree with this. If I had to choose between the young and up-and-comers who embarrassed us in Europe I'd tend to put Gaitan and Eriksen pretty far down the list to be honest.

Gaitan's played more games than the two games he played against us.
United would have been keeping tabs on him over the past while.

SET, what's your feeling on the lad?
His goals / assists ratio seems decent but is he really the player we need?
For this season he's at 4 goals and 17 assists, not bad I guess?

Not a bad player. Better than what we have. Would prefer Hazard or Gotze really.
