I cannot recommend enough boxing, muay Thai or mma gyms for a good workout. I go to the gym in my own time but train also in a muay Thai gym, the tips u get off people who actually coach these arts are invaluable. Slight adjustments here and there, new exercises. Always picking up new ideas. Yes . Martial arts of any type are amazing. I'm a practiced Shotokan Karate Dan 2 Black Belt . I dedicated 15 years of my life to it since I was 5. It is the single greatest thing my parents did for me . I am immensely thankful. I was fit , ripped and all round sexy during those years. Last 7 years without it and I've felt the effects. Forget the gym (no, I'm joking, the gym is great). If you want to keep fit, enrol in a martial arts class. Dedicate yourself to it. The benefits to the mind and body are unbelievable. Besides, you also will feel like a total fucking badass.

Genuinely don't have the time, money or inclination to do a Martial Art. I get you with regards to time. Its something you need to allocate time to. That's why I'm unable to do it now. Money however, they won't be that much more expensive than a gym in some places. These classes usually happen at gyms anyway. Inclination well that's a totally different thing.

As has been said, you need to dedicate a good few hours a week to a Martial Art to master it. With work, going to the gym, and my other past-times, I just don't have any other means of doing it. Plus, I don't like getting hit in my handsome face

I used to go and it always felt like some chore. The posts above about Martial arts make total sense to me, you get a workout and learn a skill at the same time, win win. For example my brother recently decided instead of going to the Gym he would try his hand at a white collar boxing event at the local boxing club. Sure the training is brutal but he absolutely loves it, his exact words were, "its more fun than staring at a TV screen at the Gym".

If you're staring at a TV screen whilst in the gym, you're doing the gym wrong. IMO.

Saw this thread and felt guilty. I've been to tired to hit the gym (Pilates) for a month now and I've paid for an entire year.

So. Sprints. Fuck me. Made the effort to start a schedule last night. Had to stop after three. Good Zeus they are tough going. Aiming to get to four tonight but feel like I'd recommend them already. Cannot wait to get back out on the road.

I need to head back to the gym as soon as possible. University/internship/monograph/social life have been consuming my time.
I've dropped 2kg already because I've stopped for a month. Is it risky to take supplements without heading there?

Is it risky to take supplements without heading there? I'd give supplements a miss altogether Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Not the best advice. Supplements can do wonders for achieving goals. A lot has to do with what your goals are, and what you're doing to reach those goals. Personally, I use glucosamine and cod liver oil to aid recovery, plus I chug a load of BCAA's because I'm cutting my meat intake down, so adding BCAA's to my supplementation regimen helps knit all my 'pulse proteins' together to make a full chain on the days I have veggie meal. Creatine is also great for aiding recovery. Of course, you can avoid supps, but you need to be 1000000% on your diet, sleep and stress management for maximum recovery. And unless it's your job to be in peak physical shape, no one's got time/willpower for that. So, I would say, depending on goals/lifestyle: BCAA's. Just add the powder to your water and essentially use it like a squash. Protein Shake. Especially if you're as busy as you say, because a good protein source straight after a heavy lifting session is good. Cod liver oil. I swear by this. It's done wonders for my joints over the last few years. Creatine, if like me, your recovery is turd. Otherwise, you get most everything else you need from eating 'properly'. Of course though, do whatever works for you. The above is what works for me, and I've lost 7 stone (Roughly 105lbs) in 4 years.
