Atletico are playing some superb football right now. I've said it before but whenever Jose goes Simeone should replace him imo. He has to be a contender.

Chaps- we’re going to lock this soon I think and then open two new threads, a champions league/Europa league one and then a European leagues football.
Thoughts? Or leave it as one thread, albeit a new one?

Side note- interesting to see Real use the Utd 09 method of replacing Ronaldo- don’t actually replace him. Barring a miracle it’s almost certain to have similar results. Very odd.

European Cup becoming a Champions (European) League, oil clubs, selling stadium names, changing club crests and colours, agent power (Jorge Mendes Wanderers a.k.a. Wolves) and now La Liga games in the US. Football has been dying for years now. It's only going to get worse

La Liga have been fucking desperate for years to catch up to the PL in terms of global viewership. They experimented with some really odd kick offs to try and get the Asian market to watch but had little luck. I presume they've now pivoted to the US but I can't see American fans taking LL over the PL for a number of reasons.

Side note- interesting to see Real use the Utd 09 method of replacing Ronaldo- don’t actually replace him. Barring a miracle it’s almost certain to have similar results. Very odd. I think they're better equipped to do so than we were (hard not to be tbh) with Isco, Asensio etc., and they still have the two best CMs in the world and one of the best defences. But it still seems rather mad. I thought for certain they'd ship Benzema before the Ronaldo saga unfolded, but now it seems they're relying on him up top - unless they stick Bale there with Aseniso and Isco either side I guess? It's a strange and interesting quirk that the two clubs he's left since he became a superstar have both failed to replace him. I think Real in general are struggling with the hyperinflation of the past year or two and it's gone under the radar. Because they spent 2009-2014 amassing such a collection of stars at high prices, they've been able to get by in the past 4 seasons at the absolute top level without any big money deals, as the stars they amassed were for the most part all peaking in unison. Now it looks like they'll have to replace some, and the market has changed a lot since they were paying big sums for Bale etc. Now, that will barely get you Harry Maguire, and Perez has baulked, putting his eggs in the basket of some of the younger kids they snapped up when they were winning everything - Asensio, Ceballos etc. I think they may have a bit of a dip as Perez refuses to pay silly money like Barca (they're a whole other story), PSG, Juve and the PL top 6, and eventually that will start to bite. In fairness to them, even if they were prepared to pay silly fees, no top striker is available right now. Most are on the up and already at rich clubs (Lukaku, Gabriel Jesus etc.), or only have a couple of years left and would cost a lot for not a lot of time at the top level (Lewandowski, Aguero etc.). The only proper striker in the world at the top of his game right now - other than Ronaldo of course - is Kane, and Perez understandably can't stomach the £200m+ that would be required to sign him.

U.S will always go for the P.L first, they get more coverage in their own (our) language, and we're too far ahead in marketing it. Same with Asia though without the language thing..we hit it early and we hit it hard.

They had that deal in place well before Ronaldo decided to move though, so not sure he's a replacement in their eyes. A long term replacement for Benzema maybe. The kid does look bloody good. In fairness, has anyone ever truly replaced a player of that quality? Barca have never had to replace gnome. Did Santos replace Pele, and did Maradona's clubs truly replace him?

Barca had to replace Neymar, which they did by buying Dembélé and Couthino (also replacing Iniesta). They haven’t been unqualified successes but at least they tried. Unlike us with Michael fucking Owen.

It's only going to get worse I think the top level of football is shite these days, all about corporate stuff and buisness it's just a money maker, I still try to get to edgerly park a few times a season I know the level of football is crap but it still has that bit of charm to it that I used to love. The 90s was the best era for me
