Who, Alonso? He isn't an ex-Scouser. He was at Real Sociedad until 2004, then stopped playing football for 5 years until Real Madrid coaxed him into playing again in 2009.
EDIT: He is 30 though, so probably a bit old for us.

I had to hit myself when I found myself thinking that I wouldn't mind seeing him play for Utd (although I could think of 5 better suited or more desired players).

I think we can safely rule out Spanish Players for the time being, either they all are playing for Barca or Madrid or would want to the minute they hear the faintest whisper that they are wanted. Irrespective of what they may actually be worth if its be Barca we will get mostly what they throw not what we demand , so we go for some Italians or Portugal's or African's

If he professes his love for Real, knowing what he's got at Citeh, then yeah id say that there is no hope for Spanish players. But remember, even the great Pep did leave Barca, when the time was right. and many players live under the mantra 'no looking back'. who says Thiago, once being essentially told that he's not wanted at Barca, would want to go back?

Its an extremely short-sighted policy as well - not signing a certain nationality as they may want to go home - which would almost certainly rule out Martinez and Muniain as well (2 players people want us to sign).
The same could be applied to any nationality too - signing Portugese players was mentioned - Didnt Ronaldo want to leave for Madrid? Whats his nationality again? Didnt Sahin and Ozil proclaim they would like to play in Spain?
It shouldnt matter what MIGHT happen in the future. If we have the chance to sign a great player then we should do so.

A Lot of people like Pep , but for me when he quit after losing out was more like a Sore Grape/Loser who couldn't handle it. I don't but into the theory that he needed a break and all that ,Our Manager has been going at it for more than 2 decades so i am not taking that into account , but on Silva , yea i pretty much agree , al though i would like to see how he reacts when/if Barca come for him.
Barca is pretty much "the Flavor of the Month" isn't it.

Mouthino's performance the other night was excellent. And I'm glad to see otehrs noticed that you don't need to be 14 stone and 6 '2 to be a good tackler. He harassed the spainish and got stook in when needed. (Clevs is another that can do this too I think. Put in some lovely "pick- pocket" type tackles last year) If he's valued at 25 mill then I'd go for him in a hearbeat

@set , my grudge is that while there will be players who would want to play in Spain, it has mostly been RM till recently Barca took over BigTime.
Real at least pay , Barca get away with every dirty trick to get their players at fee they can afford not as per "Market Value". While there may be few players who still fancy either one of them , Almost all mainstay Spanish players want to be at Barca these days if not, at Real.
Hence my hesitancy to sign Spanish Players. it may be short sighted , but if Ronaldo wanted to play for Barca do you honestly think we would have got the kind of money we got for him from them - No chance.
My response was to the fact that we can sell players for 50-60 in 4-5 years if they come calling, which i really don't see it happening and don't want to either. If i can get a player to stay with us for 10 years of another Nationalty albeit little less skilled or needed to improve i'd happily go after him.

WE have Nani who can get him familiarized and he along with Veloso hurried the Spanish players. They had 7.1 passes per minute i think against Portugal, as against 9.9 Vs Italy and their average of 8.7. Empathizes that you don't need thugs or Bone Crunching Tackles to win possession. We were willing to go for 30 Mil with Hazard , we'd be wise to buy Moutinho before anyone comes knocking/stealing him

Areba, are you kidding mate? That performance against Spain is more than enough proof that he would fit in here. And more so that he would fit in alongside Carrick. Moutinho is very good. Dont get me wrong I think he is a good player but he plays his best stuff in the Rooney/Kagawa position, I just dont see him as adding any kind of grit to our midfield(which is a major issue IMO I want someone to put the frightners on the Toures and Fellainis of the league ) and the players he will face week in week out in the PL will be a lot more physical than the Spanish midfield, who lets face it are fucking munchkins or the play-actor Busquets.

On 3 July 2010, Moutinho signed a five-year contract with F.C. Porto. The player fell under heavy criticism for forcing a transfer to a rival club after spending 10 years in Sporting's youth ranks, also being one of the team's star players and captain. Sporting chairman José Eduardo Bettencourt described Moutinho's conduct as deplorable: "If I had not experienced the situation, I would not believe it was possible to descend so low". Sporting awaited offers from other clubs but Moutinho forced the transfer to Porto: "We tried to get him to wait longer, so that there might be some offers from abroad, but Joao lost his temper and forced an exit to FC Porto, telling us that he had given his word to FC Porto".[5][6] After this, he became a persona non grata at the club, being called a rotten apple: "The deal was done because Sporting wanted it, because it did not want a rotten apple in its orchard, and it did not want someone who was not an example, nor dignified the flag of the club."[7] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo%C3%A3o_MoutinhoDoesnt exactly say much for his character, or lack of.

A Lot of people like Pep , but for me when he quit after losing out was more like a Sore Grape/Loser who couldn't handle it. He talked about possibly leaving after his contract ended for a couple of seasons - when Barcelona were winning everything. I think he was always going to leave this year, the timing just looks bad because they didn't win the league or CL. That said, they still won the Copa Del Ray.
