it's not about signing a winger it's about signing a player who looks every bit a United player. if he became available we would have to be in there for him. and no that doesn't mean we ignore central midfield I was thinking about Bale today, can you imagine the absolute shitters we would put up everybody if we just went and got Bale? Say Redknapp strops over his contract, and Bale has already made noises about wanting to play in the European Cup anyway. Move Nani into full-time competition with Tony V out right and Have Young and Bale competing for the left-side of and attacking midfield 3. Valencia -- Kagawa -- Bale Rooney

Young -- Kagawa -- Bale Rooney

Nani -- Kagawa -- Bale Rooney Clubs would shit themselves if we could pull that sort of a deal off. I'm beginning to think Bale would be worth the selection hassles for winger spots simply to see the bricking it reactions of everybody else. Bale would be a complete utter luxury buy. A move to 4-2-3-1 is a bit of a move away from what we'd call orthodox wing play. After all we first started this out of an attacking 4 of Rooney Tevez, Berba and Ronaldo. So having 'wing options' seems a waste when the idea is you are moving to an attacking unit that can move fluidly across the pitch, picking up different positions. Unlike say Valencia who is a deer in headlights if you move him from the right touchline. That said he'd probably fit better than Valencia, but £30odd mill for someone who wouldn't obviously improve our starting XI is somewhat far fetched. Imo an attacking line up that we've just added to is already damn strong, lets just sort out the 2 that play behind them first. It would be worth the £30mill just to see us start with Rooney Kagawa Nani and Young attacking with Valencia and Bale as the full backs. Bricks would be shat. That said, how is Bale at Lb these days? Wasted or better than he was?

Still can't defend. Then again, neither can Evra.
I was thinking we could use Tony V and Bale when we wanted to have constant width on one or either side of the pitch.
Think Tony V on the right, always giving us an option to stretch the game that way, while Young or Nani on the other side can cut-in, swap with Rooney, make a nuisance. Vice versea with Bale giving us the unending width out left. Also remember that Valencia plays in a central role for Ecuador, so it isn't as if he can't play there. Just the way we play him, his most valuable position is on the right touchline.
To be honest, I would love the ridiculous width we could get from 4-4-1-1/4-2-(wide)2-1-1 and both Valencia and Bale playing. All that room in the middle of the park for Rooney to drop into, Cleverley/Anderson to run into, with Kagawa getting himself beyond Rooney and confusing the hell out of defences. Or play Welbeck right up top, Rooney in behind him, and Kagawa as the agressively attacking CM. Talk about fluidity, nevermind sideways, look at it up and down the pitch. Centre-backs wouldn't know who to pick up, we honestly could rip teams apart. *Shudders.* #drool#

I'm not massive fan of orthodox wing play, some teams can restrict it quite well. Maybe I'd like it more if we had some 6footer with real heading ability to actually get of the end of more crosses, then it would be more effective. Hopefully Welbeck develops his aerial ability.
Maybe it would be more effective if we had a bit more engine and mobility in midfield to, but when we play Valencia and Scholes, nothing really goes through the middle. Its either Rooney dropping to then pass it wide or Scholesy pinging the ball wide. With someone else in there maybe we could mix thing up more effectively.
Still though I prefer the more flexible players. Those that can cut in or cross out wide. It not like these player cant go out wide and put in a cross, after all Nani set up more goals in an 'average season' than Valencia did in a excellent season. I genuinely believe the 4-2-3-1 is feasible main tactic for us, Kagawa gives us that extra option for it by being a genuine central player as well as being able to shift out left. We just need to solidify the partner for Carrick, Ando and Clevers were a great platform for our attacking play but we leaked a fair few goals. Not sure how many can be attributed to them though, im sure our chopping and changing in defense made a big contribution.

What about Moutinho? Is he an impossible target for us? It would give us a bit more steel in midfield....and the guy can play a bit too.....

He is a good player of course but my main concern with him would be his ability to cope with the physicality of the PL.

I'd love Moutinho here. Able to put in tackles, would fit right in next to Carrick in a midfield 3 and be given licence to roam forward and pull some strings.

Areba, are you kidding mate? That performance against Spain is more than enough proof that he would fit in here. And more so that he would fit in alongside Carrick. Moutinho is very good.

Moutinho can bite in the tackle, doesn't have to be built out of bricks to do that. He is definitely a steely sort of player.

No thanks. He will go crying back to Mommy Barca when she calls for him a la Fabregas.

No thanks. He will go crying back to Mommy Barca when she calls for him a la Fabregas. . at which point, if so, we would have nurtured him into a 50-60 mil player and will bring in a suitable replacement with the extra cash (im dreaming, i know) that is if Guardiola isnt in our dug-out. thus making his decision between the club of his youth, and the player/manager that he idolised as a youth and that gave him his big start. (more wishful thinking)

My fears too, Barca may not want him or he maybe excess to needs , but it will be like us polishing him so when the time is right they can come and take the trophy back home.
