Personally think he's a better player without Scholes in the team. He makes an interception or receives a pass, and his first thought is; "Where's Paul?" then hands it off. Never looks anywhere else, like he's used to handing over creative responsibilities. i don't agree with this, it's a common opinion but i think it's wrong. carrick always looks more assured to me when the prince is next to him. (who wouldn't be). and i think it's unfair to say he only ever looks for scholesy

I see Carrick as a potential box to box midfielder, who's been pigeonholed into a role where he makes less of an impact in games, and is becoming more and more comfortable in it. Think he could grab games by the scruff of the neck more like he did against Wigan last December. Played out of position but still looking for the ball, he was a joy to watch. Bossed the game from deep.

To be honest if I could be bothered to look for them there are some quotes from Fergie alluding to it, saying how Carrick had taken on more responsibility after Scholes had retired.

I think he was being sarcastic. Cheers.

Carrick can play that way, yes he's laid back but he can boss games like Scholes used to. Carrick doesn't get enough credit for reigning himself in so much to fulfil the role we want him to play.

he doesn't do it by being aggressive, going box to box, shouting at people, crunching in the tackles or whatever else people usually mean by 'taking the game by the scruff'. that was my point.
i think it's a bit of a myth that he's reigned himself in at united. people seem to make out he was like gerrard or essien when he played at spurs and he just wasn't at all.

Carrick often played a lot further forward for both West Ham and Spurs, is all I'm saying. He had much more licence to attack with purpose, rather than as a decoy who's ready to sit back again in at any moment.

Anderson, in his first full season helped us win a European Cup and the Premier League bossing midfields all round Europe. Modric in 5 years at Spurs won approximately, diddly squat and bossed no midfields. I'm sticking with my point about Anderson. Yeah, and Carrick, Hargreaves and Scholes were still all in front of him in the pecking order. To say he is a better player than Modric is daft.

Modric is good but he's Madrid bound and we need more of an enforcer anyway.
An enforcer who can play a bit too.

Fair play. Not the 'taking the game by the scruff' player. But without turning this into a semantic argument I stand by my sentiment that he's capable of bossing games.

yeah i don't necessarily disagree. a player of his type can boss a game by basically having it all his way when he's pulling the strings without the opposition being able to stop him. it doesn't have to be a blood and snotter who bosses a game
