Cleverley is a very good player but will never reach the level required for us to regain the CL with him in the middle of the park. I think we HAVE TO, MUST buy a CM of world class calibre in the summer. Anderson has had his chance but now needs to be moved on. Carrick will be a year older so needs help. I would like to see Alonso come to us. The dippers haven't a prayer of getting him back.

i really hope we do buy that CM. fergies faith was with cleverley and anderson this season. clev has done alright but i still regard him as a workhorse type player. ando has proved to be barely more than a part-timer, and that's being generous.
still think a box to box player would be ideal, although i do like modric, he's definitely a good player. again though, not sure how you fit him in with Kagawa and Rooney.

Alonso's an excellent player. too similar to Carrick though. and yeah, he's better, but not to a significant enough to degree to justify that sort of upheaval.

i cant see the problem with getting modric if we ever did, how does it affect rooney or kagawa? modric played deep for spurs and did a fine job, good passing decent runs and hard to knock off the ball, his work always started deep and he played there well. rooney and kagawa play further up the pitch, if naything someone with modric's passing ability will allow the other 2 to perform better.

Yep. Modric has played deeper than Rooney or Kags in the past.

Ronaldo(30) -- Modric (29) -- Cleverley (25) -- Bale (25) Kagawa (25!)/ Rooney (29) Robin van Persie (31)
^^That. . .^^ . . . in two years (Carrick being 33/34 by then) looks pretty damned fine to me. Mmm-hmm. Nice balance of youth and experience.

We need to clarify Fletcher's future before signing any new midfield players. If he's coming back then I don't think we need to sign another DM. Jones, Carrick and Fletcher should be enough to cover that position and with Ando, Cleverly, Kagawa, Rooney, Giggs and Scholes playing in the more central and attacking midfield positions I really can't see any reason to strengthen the middle.
What we need to do is secure the left back. Is Buttner good enough to replace Evra? Is Fabio coming back to contend for the position? Do we need to buy another left back? Also, Our wingers have not been the best this season. Valencia has struggled, Young is inconsistent and I actually think Nani has been the better of the three. Too bad he's injured again. This is also a position we could look to strengthen. I say bring in Bale or Rodriguez(from Porto) if possible.

Fletch is done, I don't think he'll ever get back to his best. Scholes is most likely finished this summer, Giggs next - God willing - and Anderson can't complete a season. Carrick is 31.
Jones, Cleverley, and that's it for the orthodox central midfield (by which I mean not an "AM" behind the striker) in one or two seasons' time. We have to strengthen now, before we get even more desperate. Unless, as many of us always say, we break recent shabits and see the likes of Powell, Tunnicliffe, or Petrucci getting a fair chance in the first team.
Agreed on wingers though, if Valencia can't get firing on all cylinders again and Nani stays abhorrantly inconsistent, ditto Young. We have Zaha to play though. Also, our younth teams play with few traditional wingers, but Mats Daehli, Lingard, and Larney Cole should all get oppurtunities, hopefully.
Left-back, Baines could leave if Moyes goes. Fabio has done well at QPR when he's gotten games, although Molten Face is one cu*t when it comes to playing him.

We certainly do not have to clarify Fletcher's future before signing a central midfielder because even 3 years ago, when he was fit, we've looked a bit too light in the middle. Quality-wise, not quantity wise. And even this season, when we're well ahead in the league, we've been massively reliant on Carrick. If Carrick was injured for 5-6 weeks this season we would not be winning it. That, for me, is why he should be our player of the year.
And I hope to god I haven't just jinxed anything saying all that.

I'll be honest I find Modric over rated. Even at spurs. I'd much rather Strootman or a player like Wanyama in the squad.
