We played better with Saha up top than ever under Berbatov. Ferguson dropping him for £7million Hernandez and an up and coming Welbeck shows how much he shook off previous tags! He was also dropped for the Champions League final (entire) squad. If i'm offered get rid of Berba for Lewandowski who will get in the box and cause problems, as opposed to one who will slow down the game completely, theres one winner. Hernandez and Welbeck just suited Rooney better. I think its very unfortunate for Berba's United career to be judged on the basis of his failure to strike up a partnership with Rooney. If we had built our team around him he would could probably have contributed more than Wazza. We'll just never know. Berba for Lewy - not for me. Replacing a 4th choice striker with 1st or 2nd choice could disrupt the squad. Oh and I meant 'our 19th' in my previous post. My fixation with the 20th manifested itself!

SS1, I just think Berba still has qualities that make him a United player. We're not THAT skint that we so desperately need him off our wage bill and the club even said, if they don't get a fair price they wont sell. I love Berba, he's got the best touch in our entire squad and, not too long ago, was top scorer in the league. It's not his fault he isn't picked after all, he's not pulling a Hargreaves. Sure his wages are fairly high and he's likely to go but if we're talking about spending 30 million on a 4th striker when many of us think we're sufficiently covered there then that 5 mil doesn't seem too bad for a player who knows the club, the league and, more importantly, his team-mates. I've always thought Berba would've done even better had we possessed a player capable of thinking on his level creatively, as well as putting balls precisely where they need to be. Someone like Kagawa. Berba drops deep too much and slows it down, Kagawa takes up advanced positions (more or less where Berbatov drops to) and slips it through. Hernandez and Welbeck thrive on that, so does Lewandowski. I'm not saying Berbatov doesn't get in the box and score goals, thats more or less all of his goals but he does not run off the last man and if Ferguson is trying to develop a faster, slicker United in transition, Berbatov is a slow, ageing player with little football under his belt in the past 12 months. He has one year left on his contract and has been told he can go so will have little motivation for another year at the club and frankly, we should sell him whilst he has a resale value.

This is a very valid point. It makes sound business sense to sell Berba. That would benefit both United and him. I'm not against that. But from a romantic's point of view who loves watching him play it would sadden me when he does eventually leave.

Back on topic I think Lewandowski looks a quality player and would give us a lot of competiion. Think he offers us something different from the others as well, he seems more of a 6 yard box presence. Wouldn't be opposed to a younger player either as we do have enough options up top to develop one other. If Turkish media are to be believed, Macheda's boat may have sailed already.

Just sayin mate, there were a lot of variables that lead to Berba having a less than convincing (to some) career at Utd. I'm content with the strike power we have and If, by some twist of fate, he stays I won't be too bothered Lewa is a lot of cash, I'd rather get that all round midfielder to partner Carrick and if that means we miss out on a striker, a 30 million rated striker, in order to afford that player then so be it. He plays a different game, sure, but variety isn't always such a bad thing. As you say, Welbz and Hernandez play a different game to Berba. Essentially I do agree with you that in order to make a profit we should sell Berba, I'm actually just drifting off from my actual point - we probably don't need another striker.

There were question marks during his first two seasons but I'd say his contribution towards our 20th well and truly did away with them. Next - How do you define a cult hero? If Forlan's brace at Anfield could earn him that tag I'm pretty certain Berba's hat trick at OT matched that. Anyway, to me he is. And I'm willing to hazard a guess that most of us feel that way about him. If thats your own opinion i'm not going to argue, I wouldn't represent most other United fans with having a particular fondness for Berbatov though. My version of a 'cult hero' is more personality based, as well as contributions such as that. We played better with Saha up top than ever under Berbatov. Ferguson dropping him for £7million Hernandez and an up and coming Welbeck shows how much he shook off previous tags! He was also dropped for the Champions League final (entire) squad. Tell me, what are your thoughts on Ryan Giggs getting another year?

Giggs still fits in with how we play and speeds up the play if anything. He also made at least 10 more starts than Berbatov this season and almost guaranteed will be on less money. Going back to an earlier point he is as big a legend as will ever be at the club, not quite like Berbatov.
Don't see your point here?

Tell me, what are your thoughts on Ryan Giggs getting another year? Brilliant Bestie. What do you mean? Giggs doesnt slow play down he speeds it up! Gifting the ball away regularly leads to counter attacks from the other team Back on topic, we really don't need another striker. The signing of Kagawa suggests a shift away from 2 striker starting anyway, so Welbecks already got extra competition to keep his place.
