Alfred's reaction to seeing Bruce in Florence at the end was NOT one of disbelief at seeing the man he thought was dead. Therefore that would suggest to me that Alfred was in on Bruce's plan to fake his death to "escape to a new life".
But, for me, that is in direct contradiction with Alfred's reaction when standing at Bruce's "grave" at Wayne Manor. I wouldn't say that that was an outpouring of emotion for everyone else's benefit. That was real. Besides, he was still sobbing even after everyone else walked away from the grave and he was left alone. Alfred really believed Bruce was dead.
But that's simply my interpretation...
The cafe sighting at the end was the continuation of Alfred's fantasy. His own way of telling himself that the man he'd loved and cared for all his life was finally at peace.

i think if bruce wayne had died they'd have made it more obvious. alfred would see him and smile, look down at his paper, look up again and wayne is gone. or something like that. but they left the ending with robin open for you to imagine the rest so who knows bane - i thought he was good. i'm not a fan of too many of the DC heels, Joker is the best in any comic but after that I think marvel trumps DC for bad guys. but scarecrow and bane are good and in thought they did a good job with two-face. I'd have liked to have seen more of the nutters in the trilogy, more of victor zsasz, calendar man, mad hatter. stews point about the prison section breaking up the momentum is interesting, didn't really see it that way myself cos knowing that bane broke batmans back in the comics i didn't expect them to do it mid-film but they did so the prison section and his recovery time was pretty necessary. plus it gave gotham time to get run down before he could come back and save it overall love the trilogy, just wish they were doing 4 instead of 3. questions, 1) how good is bruce waynes knee brace? 2) where the fuck did scarecrow come from, had he been locked up in arkham asylum? 3) anyone know what they had in mind for joker if heath ledger hadn't passed on? Bane took over Gothem and released all the cons.

Yeah I noticed that about Alfred too, but presumed he was 'acting" for the other mourners. And just stayed in character after they left!
Jim, I don't think they ever really went into what they had planned for the Joker. Though I seem to remember talk about Adrien Brody maybe taking over so presumably they initially wanted to keep the character. Which is understandable as he is for me, the greatest villian ever created.

This sums it up pretty well for me. Thanks. Yeah, it's probably my favourite ever trilogy. I already have the first 2 on blu-ray but I'll be pre-ordering the blu-ray of TDKR for sure.

Watched it last night. Really enjoyed the last one. Never going to be as good as the TDK, but Nolan wrapped it up the best he could. Tom Hardy done a decent job with Bane, but how do follow Heath Ledger's Joker? Even trying get kudos for me. Nolan had the death of Ledger to contend with, when finishing the trilogy. Catwoman was cool though. Loved the 3 reboots of the Batman films. Christian Bale has brought credibility back to the dark knight. Could see the blu ray breaking some records. Can''t wait for that to come out!

His own way of telling himself that the man he'd loved and cared for all his life was finally at peace. very interesting point as it goes. the crying at the grave was well over the top if he knew that he was going to survive. and yeah he didn't look shocked to see him at the cafe. but maybe he found out in between 'burying' him and the sighting at the cafe. i still think bruce wayne was alive. remember this trilogy of films is also aimed at 12+ year old kids as well as us lot so alfreds reactions are going to be very black and white. DKR isn't the most subtle of films so i think everything is as it appears to be at the end. then again film is art so the choice is there to interpret it as you have

Yeah, it's probably my favourite ever trilogy. it's right up there with some greats. the bourne movies take some beating for me as a trilogy goes. but it's not gonna be a trilogy for too much longer of course

Which is understandable as he is for me, the greatest villian ever created. i just googled Adrien Brody and he looks like he's got a decent joker face. different from heath but still, under different circumstances he looks great for the part. i think they made the right choice leaving joker out, sadly.

Tom Hardy done a decent job with Bane, but how do follow Heath Ledger's Joker? you can't especially when hardy only had his physique and eyes/expression to work with. but i thought he was really good. he's played a few nasty bastards so i found him believable

Personally i think bruce is alive. Alfred has some time to accept his death(so he thought), and then when he sees him in florence(?) he is accepting and happy for bruce and he does not over react.

I thought Hardy was breathtaking. But I agree jim, they were much better off leaving the Joker alone after Heath's efforts.

Yeah Hardy packed on some serious muscle. Wonder what he did to get in that shape.
Steroids!

Yeah Hardy packed on some serious muscle. Wonder what he did to get in that shape. Steroids! A solid two months of intense training and creatine could do the trick. You have to figure they are provided some of the best trainers and dont worry about a 9-5.
