What we need to do is somehow get Yaya Toure.
It's striking, if you look at our squad and listed players that would get in a European XI, it's clear just how lacking our midfield is.
In defence Vidic would be a certainty - Rio and Evra probably wouldn't now, but once would have been assured.
Up front we have Rooney and RVP.
On the wings Valencia and Nani would be in contention. (Despite all you Nani haters out there)
Then we have a bunch of players that look like they could one day be in that squad - De Gea, Jones, Smalling possibly.
In midfield, you'd say Scholes, but I'd put him in the same bracket as Rio and Evra. He's not as good as he once was, despite how good he still is. Kagawa would too, come to think of it, but I'm choosing not to class him as the type of midfielder we need.
A team like United shouldn't be in this kind of situation. Go around any of the major European clubs -the ones we consider to be on the same level as, then name their midfielders - it's ridiculous how Fergie has allowed our engine room to be so neglected.

it's described by some as a blind spot. and when you look at the few quality center mids he's bought over the last 20 years it's hard to argue.

I agree - it does certainly appear that Ferguson has a weakness picking out top midfielders.
Would love for us to bring a new No2 in who could convince Ferguson of the need to invest there. But then, it's not like Ferguson hasn't been looking at midfielders for a couple of years now - Modric, Sneijder, Nasri etc.

For once Dan, and it may just be the Mod-high I'm feeling, but I cannot fault a single word you just said.

But then, it's not like Ferguson hasn't been looking at midfielders for a couple of years now - Modric, Sneijder, Nasri etc. right. he seems to be watching the market for those floating attacking mid types. a true central midfielder though just never seems to be on the radar. when we went out to milan in the cup in 07 hargreaves was such the obvious answer to our problems and fergie made it happen. you couldn't see that type of signing happening at the minute

I think the Gaffer has it in his head that we need to play more like Barcelona, nippy-passy types. Thing is, we're not good enough at it, it's a completely foreign philosophy to us as a club, and it's a tactic that simply doesn't cut it in the Premier League. So then the 'limpness' of our midfield carries forward into European games as well.
Dan's right, we need Yaya Toure. Or similar.

Thing is though, even Barca play with a DM, Fergie's ignorance towards such a player is unexplainable and will continue to prevent us from realistically competing with the likes of Barca and RM. It'd make us so much more solid with a Tiote type player in the middle, it's not as if he can only do tackling role either, he's adapt enough to play a simple passing game; Either of the following would allow us to control games like yesterday much more easily and how it should be; Carrick Tiote Cleverley Rooney RvP Kagawa or Tiote Cleverley / Carrick Nani Kagawa Rooney RvP People may disagree and say that Rooney and Kagawa shouldn't play outwide etc but that wouldn't be the case, the point of these formations is to allow for interchange up top so no player would be in a set position for the whole match.

Yep, I don't think I have ever come out to say this... but Fellani's sheer size and afro super power might help us shore up our midfield physically. I think he isn't world-class, but definitely a bloody hand full, especially in the premier league, and since the PL is our bread and butter... why not? Him and that Victor Wanyama Celtic guy, since everyone has been raving about him recently.
£15million for Wanyama and £25million for Fellani - would that work?

Call me crazy, but something tells me he will be signing for us in January. It is the retardedly optimistic feeling I have.

Think he'll join the Renters myself. It should help them with FFP. They just made a whopping 1 million profit so their rolling in it.

He isn't the player we need, he plays behind the striker.
I don't think he is technically good enough to play in a 2 man midfield. (he is a good player though)

(he is a good player though) I hardly watch Everton week in week out but I believe he's only shifted there very recently and has spent way more time playing deeper. 6 goals and a few assists in 10 games too and still has some of the highest tackling stats in the league. He's looked good and I'd be interested. Though I'm pretty sure we were in for Baines but couldn't get the price to a reasonable level, they'd play even harder ball in Jan with him. At the moment they are a decent shout for fourth, he'd take a big fee to budge. Not sure he'd be worth it, but maybe.
