I agree. I think if Jones continues showing the performance he did against Tottenham, and develops in that way, I think he can do a good job in the midfield as a box-box or defensive mid. He has such brilliant attributes for the role - except picking out passes, which I would say it's not outstanding, but not poor - average at it.
Personally, Evans and Vidic should start week in and week out. If Vidic is not up to task, then Evans and Rio / Smalling combo.

Yeah, I'd have Vida -- JEvans penned as our strongest pairing from next season, with Rio and Smalling the rotations. Smalling -- JEvans as the long-term.

in the mean time, full-time dutch footall pundits and ex-players were laughing off the comparison with keane. some said he wasn't ready for england and a club the size of united. some also said he wasn't even very good. To be fair jim, we're not expecting a finished product. But, at 22, he's already made 15 appearances for Holland whilst that'll no doubt increase when MVB retires. They're not a bad side, eh? Also, looking at some of Strootman's stats, It's obvious he's got the durability and leadership he'd need at United. Also Louis van Gaal has confirmed he'll be captaining Holland at the 2014 World Cup. Not bad for a player some label as not good enough. LVG: “Strootman is an example, on and off the pitch, especially inside the lines. On the pitch you see that he stands up for his team, outside the pitch this can improve." - I'm not going to draw parallels but we sort of need that type of character in our midfield at times, no? Also, he's generally regarded as a holding midfielder who can fulfill a play-maker role. If you look at his career he's gone from the Dutch second tier to being Holland captain in two years, having made his debut for the national side just before his 21st birthday. In his last 4 seasons these are his stats for club and country, I know it's the Dutch League but bare with me: Year - - - - - - Apps - - - - - - Subbed off - - - - - - Goals - - - - - - Assists09/10 - - - - - - 40 - - - - - - - - 11 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 4 - - - - - - - - - - - 9 10/11 - - - - - - 43 - - - - - - - - 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 7 - - - - - - - - - - - 10 11/12 - - - - - - 49 - - - - - - - - 9 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 6 - - - - - - - - - - - 17 12/13* - - - - - 31 - - - - - - - - 4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 7 - - - - - - - - - - - 9

If Wanyama and Strootman costs just £8m each... I'd say just get both of them in. Fletcher's doubtful (really don't want anything to happen to him!), while Giggs and Scholes should be retiring soon, and maybe we can offload another if we require to do so.
Anderson, Cleverley, Carrick, Powell, Jones, Strootman and Wanyama (excluding Kagawa here). Not a bad midfield selection if you ask me...
...either that, or I'm just having FM mentality.

Perhaps a little of the latter At:) Apparently Wanyama is definitely not coming in and it's widely believed Strootman's agent is hampering our progress, though even if he were available, some are still unconvinced we should take a punt on him. Seems a pretty safe investment to me for anything under 16/17mil.

Great work jay! And I'm completely on board with you about Strootman, for anything around 15 million he's defo worth buying IMO.

I thought he was okay, actually. He didn't really help with the attack, and defensively, Celtic were all over the place - so was difficult to tell. Handy composure under pressure, good body strength, and tidy short passing though.
Will be seeing how he plays at the next leg.
Still... if he's still available for £8million, why not?

Celtic wnt let him go for tha much, theyre gonna want a lot more than that, especially if they see big clubs are circling him.

Thought he did reasonably well tonight. His distribution is quite accurate and he's strong. Not many players knock him off the ball. He's calm on the ball.

Anymore than £10million... then I would wait and let the scouts do the assessments. I thought he was okay, actually. I can't figure if he was good or just decent, just thought he was decent / okay, with a few good showings. Defensively, I didn't really notice him in action. He was playing in a DM position in a quasi-442 diamond set-up, but didn't really see him defending that well when Juve broke through with the last two goals. In comparison, I would definitely take Jones over Wanyama in that kind of position. Celtic kept using the flanks, so Wanyama didn't really figure much in their attacks. So all I can say is that he's a tidy player.

He went through Pirlo on one occasion near the end. I like that. Pirlo's a class act, and Wanyama wasnae afraid of sticking some studs on him.
