..do we really need another central defender? I'm thinking the same thing. I do find this a strange one.

Yeah, makes no sense at all.
Our defenders have perfect fitness records and we have never been short of players at the back in the past have we?

We're signing this guy just in case all our players at the back become simultaneously injured, so we can give him a run in the side at some point in the future?

Garay is another young defender who needs to play every week, and we can't even give smalling a game every week, so i don't see the logic.
if rio leaves then yeah we could use another defender, but Smalling is the natural replacement and he should be in the side week in week out, so we should be looking to bring in a capable, experienced defender who won't be hamstrung by not playing all the time.

Been saying this for a while but I can't see it with the way Rio, Evans and Vidic are playing.

Smalling is the future. there comes a time when you have to make a tough decision about moving on a senior player to get your young player in the side. Smalling's got to be a regular next season.

Even if Rio leaves, we'd have Vidic - Evans as our first choice, then Smalling, Jones, and Keane, (who's just been called up to England's U21 squad) for cover. Sheasey and Brown left to make room for these lads, so signing someone else and stemming their development makes no sense.

Something else which comes to mind is that we've decided to push Jones into midfield, play him in there all of the time (which isn't going to happen) to make room for Garay to come into the squad in a defensive capacity.
Don't see it.

He is getting to the age where he needs first team football week in week out, but I don't think he will get it.

Yeah, Smalling and Evans are our future.
If we get more injuries at the back we need to trust in young Keane and give him a chance, rather than playing Carrick.
We certainly should be interested in any quality young players that may be available, but unless the new Stam/Baresi becomes available and we simply cannot afford to miss out on him, then we have other areas we could do with strengthening first.
