Yeah, reckon you're on the right track Alt.
If, in two years time, Rio and Vidic are gone we'll then still have Garay (28) as the senior figure, who will have settled in well by then, plus Smalling (25), Evans (27) & Jones (23)& most likely Keane (22).
Someone at the club might have realized Vida won't get back to where he was and this is a contingency, who knows, if it's 17 million as I'm reading then it feels a bit steep?

The only reason i can see Garay being signed is if Moyes has plans to play Phil Jones in midfield. Rio, Vidic are not getting younger. Evans is a top defender and will only get better. Can't rely on Chris Smalling he spends more time injured.

I rate Garay, was unlucky at Real IMO. And Real rarley buy bad players.
I think I mentioned Rio's only got a year left in him, and with his TV comitments, a new CB makes sense, especially with Vida also not able to play two games a week anymore.
Also, might mean Moyes sees Jones as a midfielder more than a CB.

Jones into midfield, we play Strootman and Fabregas/Thaigo higher up/Carrick's successor.

Why can't we sort out our midfield and then all the rest? We don't need a CB for the next season - Evans is one of the better defenders around, Vidic seemed perfectly OK at the end of the season, Rio has at least a year in him, then there are Smalling and Jones (who I'd rather se as CB). A CB next summer if Rio goes and Vida has more problems I can understand, but not rigt now when we need midfielders/wingers of better quality. Or maybe we have 100m + to spend and we'll get them all....yeah right...

this signing as many have said makes sense only if jones will be converted to center mid, if thats the case expect just one midfioeld signing.
or maybe vidic will be sold

Won't go away this rumour. If we do sign a centre half I really hope it doesn't mean a potentially outstanding centre back does not get converted in to a midfielder. I have seen nothing to suggest Jones can play in midfield on a regular basis.

He's done a centre back's job in midfield - man-marking, on a few occasions. For me that doesn't make him a midfielder. And it is not something you would want to continue in a two man central midfield. |

When everyone looked at our squad before the window, in terms of where we were well stocked and where we desperately needed to strengthen, how many of us would have said "yep, let's bring in a right back and another central defender"
We'll have the most depth in the league with regards to defenders if this happens.
