I was hoping we'd sign a right back in case Rafael got injured/suspended. I'm not sure that there's much to this story - he was linked to us in the past, and we've got a new manager who would either have to be keen on him as well, or it's a club transfer and not one of Moyes's.

Won't go away this rumour. If we do sign a centre half I really hope it doesn't mean a potentially outstanding centre back does not get converted in to a midfielder. I have seen nothing to suggest Jones can play in midfield on a regular basis. Try watching any games he's played for us in centre midfield. Then you'll see some stuff to make that suggestion for you. EDIT: Nevermind, tatty has already made that point. I have, see my previous comment for why to me it doesn't suggest that he would be a convincing regular central midfielder. |

When everyone looked at our squad before the window, in terms of where we were well stocked and where we desperately needed to strengthen, how many of us would have said "yep, let's bring in a right back and another central defender" We'll have the most depth in the league with regards to defenders if this happens. In fairness, having an extra CB will be very helpful when the other 1047 we have get injured. |

Looking at this it makes sense. Vidic and Rio are not getting any younger ,Smalling seems to have problems with Injuries now and again , which would leave us with Jones and Evans. While good we wouldn't have much cover and throwing in the youngsters in the mix won't help . As on mistake, one loss and the Finger will get pointed at Moyes for not seeing this, for not having the foresight or Trusting the youth too much and being Naive and all that. Pretty Much Vultures to a carcass and I don't just mean the ABU and Media .
So The club is making sure that Cover is provided to all areas to smooth things for Moyes IMO. Its going to be a very Important Summer for us this one

Don't know how good he is but if this is to take our dependance offRio & Vida while Jones & Smalling improve & hopefully stay fit it might be a good signing. It's a strange one though.

Just on this again- I think most of us love the idea of having a large squad. There is also the fear that this 17 mill won't now be spent on central midfield, which has been the case over the last few years (Powell being the only midfielder bought since Rome 2009) However we'll only know whether this has happened on September the 1st so until why not another defender I suppose?

As It will stand after this signing: Centre Halves: Evans, Jones, Smalling, Ferdinand, Vidic, Garay, Keane(looks a good prospect) Centre Midfield: Carrick, Clevers, Anderson, Giggs Do we need another CH over at least 2 CM's?  ?? Getting frustrated now. |

Tbh, this is looking more like a contingency for Rio's eventual departure next year. Another top CH to play alongside Vidic and integrate until, eventually, he leaves the year after. Otherwise everyone will know we're in need of a CB when the time comes and the prices will go up accordingly.
Leaving us with Evans & Garay/Smalling as our future first choice pairing. The fact Jones can play at CB and CM is a bonus, he'll get games where he's best.
I really hope it's not 17 million though, that seems very expensive.
