Just seeing this reported on Sportwitness sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/discipline-problems-push-barca-ace-to-manchester-united-for-just-Today all the Spanish sport newspapers we could find had a Thiago story of some kind. The gist is that his progress has been halted by two things. Firstly, there are alleged disciplinary issues and a feeling that he thinks he's already made it to the top level, when improvement is still needed. Secondly, he was the blue-eyed boy of Pep and now Tito isn't quite so keen and wants to brings players in other positions in. Marca, a Madrid based newspaper, will be enjoying stirring this particular pot. A La Masia boy who was meant to be the future of Spanish football, gone a little off track. They say that Manchester United are already in negotiations with Barcelona about buying the midfielder this summer, with David Moyes obviously hopeful he can get the best out of Thiago. Marca claim that player's buy-out clause of €90m has been reduced to just €18m because of a clause in his contract dictating he needed to play a certain number of games. It's possible Marca are pushing that slightly but it's very clear in Spain right now that Thiago is likely to be on his way. If Manchester United could get him for around £16.5m then that would be one of the bargains of the summer. We reckon the fee would be slightly higher and Marca are just enjoying themselves slightly, but with the Catalan newspapers also running 'Thiago Out' stories, then an exit looks increasingly likely. A fee of around £18m - £20m would probably be more likely. There might actually be legs in this one....but the Spanish press is generally as bad as ours so probably not....

sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/discipline-problems-push-barca-ace-to-manchester-united-for-just-About a week ago we covered a story from Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo about Barcelona midfielder Thiago. They had him on the front page and the following four pages were also dedicated to the club selling him as they look to offload some fringe players and bring a couple of stars in. We said at the time: 'Mundo Deportivo's first four pages today are dedicated to Barcelona putting Thiago Alcantara, 22, on the market. The Catalan club apparently want rid and are prepared to sell him for just €25m, which by today's standards is a bargain. His buy-out clause is €90m but Barcelona are so keen to reduce the size of their squad, and raise funds for other deals, that they want a quick deal. He's one of several who are likely to be facing the exit but Mundo's insistence is perhaps the biggest splash on a player leaving so far.' Today all the Spanish sport newspapers we could find had a Thiago story of some kind. The gist is that his progress has been halted by two things. Firstly, there are alleged disciplinary issues and a feeling that he thinks he's already made it to the top level, when improvement is still needed. Sell Ando, bring in Thiago and a Box to Box midfielder and central midfield is sorted.

m.talksport.co.uk/radio/sports-breakfast/130522/hunter-man-uniteds-pursuit-bargain-barcelona-starlet-198110talkSPORT's Spanish football expert, Graham Hunter, claims Manchester United are in pole position to land Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara and believes they would be getting a 'bargain'. “Thiago Alcantara's been breaking through the ranks at Barcleona for a few years,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “Man United have had a tickle at him twice already, and at one stage they asked me to put them in touch with his father, who I know. They tried to sign him once and he wasn't ready to go. “Man United thought Cesc Fabregas' arrival would diminish the amount of game time that Thiago would get and that has been true. “His development needs more game time whether that's in the Camp Nou or at Old Trafford. “Man United are so well informed, given the number of times that they have watched him. “There is definitely a big decision to come for Barcelona and Thiago because they need the money to restock generally and he needs to play. “He’s seen as a two footed creative midfielder and on a number of occasion he's played in the pivot role. “Although he is a young man who does more showy things than he should, he can play two or three positions at Man United. The price would be around £15million, which would be a bargain.” -------------- www.marca.com/2013/05/22/en/football/barcelona/1369206060.htmlManchester United is looking to contract Thiago Alcantara for next season. It will not even have to enter into negotiations with Barcelona if it stumps up a figure of €18 million, a proposal under serious consideration. That is the total for the player's current buy-out clause. Thiago renewed his contract two seasons ago when his release fee was set at €90 million. This amount was reduced, however, to €18 million if he did not play a fixed number of games. And that is exactly what has happened. The player's salary should also not present a problem for his departure. The midfielder currently earns €1.8 million a season, a sum which could easily be topped by a number of European clubs. Bayern Munich would be another option. Guardiola was always one of his supporters when at Barcelona. In fact it was Pep who backed the payment of his salary, breaking from the general footballing norm that players of his age who moved up to the first team received between €1 million to €1.5 million. Thiago has not been happy with the way this season has gone for him, a factor that could hasten his exit. Vilanova has not used him very much, at least, not as much as the player wanted. He ranks sixteenth in terms of minutes played throughout the season. -------------- -------------- Bestie, I'm curious - after all this time without significant investment in midfield, how can you so adamantly say no to a player who is young, less than 20 million and would improve our squad immeasurably? Surely it's not just because he plays for Barca? To be honest, I'd rather we go for Thiago at 15 million, a player who can play a variety of positions, than Fellaini for over 20 mil. We'd likely still have cash to spend on another midfielder.

Because after all this time not investing in our midfield, what is the point in finally doing so but doing it wrong? Matic, Strootman, Moutinho, Gundogen. These are the sorts of player we need to be making top priority.
I didn't just put different formatting on those No's for no reason.
Kid is a Billy-big boots? No thanks. Moysie doesn't need to be taking on a pet project for his first major signing at United, moulding a big-time Charlie's attitude into something resembling a United player. He likes a certain sort of player, and while I firmly believe he could sort a lad's attitude out, I don't want that taking his time in an important summer for us.
Pep's golden boy? No thanks, if he comes good Pep will likely come calling from Munich, or wherever else he has moved onto after taking another stress-induced holiday while waiting for a cushy top job to waltz into.
La Masia raised and bred? Well if Pep doesn't jerk the leash, then you can be sure Barca will be at their usual when we've moulded the boy into a superstar. 'Thiago needs to, wants to come home. Oh, and there is no way we are paying top value, we'll take him at a discount because we're Barca grazia very much.'
So kind of "just because he plays for Barca", but not in the immediately presumed sense. I'm not against, for example, Fabregas signing for us. Although again he wouldn't be my first choice.
EDIT: Also, doesn't he play in Kagawa's position? If we buy someone to play there ahead of him I'll weep real-life tears.

I get where you're coming from Bestie, all valid points. I just refuse to throw my toys out at the sight of an actual midfielder coming in. Would you be opposed to selling Ando and replacing him with Thiago, even if we get get one of those players we so desperately need? Would he improve the squad more than Ando? I think so, could be the bargain of the summer. Just to clarify, I'd rather have us sign Thiago than no-one at all in midfield. It's really come to that point now where we simply need to improve that area. I still think Strootman will be coming in, call it a gut feeling.

Considering how our wingers have performed this year I'm surprised at that response.

Considering how our wingers have performed this year I'm surprised at that response. #hmm# When Massimo was flailing all about himself, did you give up on our time-honoured traditions of playing a goalkeeper too? #hmm# #bangin# EDIT: How about Carrick, Matic, Thiago..Bale drifting from wing to wing and Kagz somewhere in the middle behind RvP We tried the 'one winger' thing this season. Didn't work, we just ended up with Evra having to bomb up the left-hand side and then getting caught out going the other way. Plus the downside of Kagawa/Rooney/whomever else was playing behind RvP got crowded out.
