Considering how our wingers have performed this year I'm surprised at that response. #hmm# When Massimo was flailing all about himself, did you give up on our time-honoured traditions of playing a goalkeeper too? #hmm# #bangin# How is that relevant to what I said? We have a possibly outgoing Nani, Toni V, a talented prospect in Zaha and Young. Those are hardly the scariest "width" options. There's no need to be smug, it was only a suggestion, regardless of what we're used to seeing as a line-up. I know there's only one formation for you, 4-4-2, hence your opinion. Those three, along with our current crop, would enable us to add dynamism to our midfield, regardless of what team/formation we're playing. Obviously we'll likely always have wingers on the pitch, but when plan A (ping it out wide) isn't working we'd have options.

I deliberately included silly smileys in my post to indicate non-seriousness. And I do not only like 4-4-2! I actually quite prefer 4-4-1-1. . .

Haha, fair dues.
You'll have no problem with Moyesey then #thumb#
Me and my continental formations will be over there, in the corner.

This seems somewhat believable. I remember when negotiating his new contract some time back the was talk of him wanting some assurances on playtime or alike. So that clause could be accurate. Oddly enough the media don't seem to incorrectly report release clauses, or it never seems to be.
If indeed its true and its around 16mill, we got try simple as. I'm quite a fan of his anyway. He's one of the top talents around and he is a central mid. He's not an 'attacking mid, in the hole, kagawa' player just because he's silky and Brazilian sounding. He plays deeper.
We have plenty of room for at least two mids. Three potentially. If he's really available for that figure, no brainer.

Seriously though, I do like other formations than 4-4-2/4-4-1-1. For example, a middle three and two wingers/wing forwards playing ahead of them but behind the line of a frontman has benefits as well.
I just don't like to see a team set up without width in it, I think it's too limiting to a team's attacking play and puts too much pressure on the full-backs to get up and down to be 100% effective both attacking and defensively. Natural width makes the pitch bigger, which makes it easier for talented ball-players in the middle as they get more space. I know it's basic footie tactics 101 but it works, and United in particular can make it look unbelievably good doing it.
It would be a shame to lose/change that just to accomodate certain players because they're cheap. It's like I alluded to in the 'Fergie's Regrets' thread, keeping Keane beyond his best saw Veron shoe-horned into a congested 3, which really stymied his ability to control games.

Hell yeah Fletch, agree with all your points. He plays deeper, often as pivot, and he'd add edge to a very depleted department in our team. Didn't he win player of the tournament when he was at his u21 Euros too?
The fact that there even was clause bordering on 90 million should tell you everything.
I'm saying Thiago & Strootman (etc) and our midfield problem is solved for about 30 -35 mil.
Also, didn't Tatty say (last year or the year before) that we were trying to get Thiago?

Not sure what tatty said but we've been in for him twice before so I imagine if the reports are true that he's ready to leave, we'll be interested as the reports indicate. Bestie: you mentioned about a big attitude etc but I think he's far from that, I think he's generally thought of as a good, down to earth lad, never read stories about a bad attitude or anything else due to lack of playing time etc. Would be a brilliant signing for us. As already mentioned, he's a proper CM, he doesn't play CAM (although he probably could) so he wouldn't interfere with Kagawa. Sell Ando, sign Thiago and Matic and our midfield is sorted. I think he's a mixture of both Cleverley and Anderson, can do the simple pass and move like Cleverley but can also drive forward and be creative. If next season we lined up like the following I'd be happy; Carrick / Matic / Thiago (any of them two) Valencia / Nani Kagawa Bale / Ronaldo / Di Maria RvP

He's better than any wing option we have at the moment.

Aye Tatty did talk about him early last summer, worked us up a bit the cock tease he is. Backs up what he said was accurate, don't think paper really picked up on it though. Graham Hunter said we've tried twice before, I wonder if its our influence that this supposed clause was inserted. This sounds a really quite plausible transfer so far to me. It would be great that it leaves plenty left to reinforce with others too.

He's better than any wing option we have at the moment. true. a touch overrated, not my favourite winger, but he's far from shit. as for thiago. although bestie is anti-anything barca and to a lesser extent spanish outside of real madrid by reflex and either ignorant to it or in denial, i share his reservations this time.

I must say I did laugh at Bestis outrage about the whole thing. As if he'd have reacted the same if it was a equally gifted player in the same situation at another club. At this supposed price, what exactly is to be reserved about? Especially if its true we've been trying to get him for 2 years already.

Don't wanna sound smug, but yeah. This has been a goer since March or so. Lad's keen as mustard. Barca want to sell, but not for the lower figure, coz they don't wanna look like cunts. Only downside is Pep's a keen admirer too, and with Fergie announcing retirement, that could be a kicker.
