Benfica have apparently lowered their asking price for Matic to 20-25 mill. Suggestions that they realised nobody would trigger the release clause in his contract for the barmy money they were looking for. Interesting.

Media are saying we're deffo looking at Matic but we won't bid this early in May, also United think Benfica may lower the fee slightly more later on in the summer. Make of that what you will.

Benfica's release clause price was huge for Matic, they've got rid of that. Seems like they've realised that wasn't going to be matched by anyone.

Still odd. High release clauses indicate an integral player - someone the club dont want to lose unless its for a daft fee (think ronaldos is 140+ mill).
WIllingly lowering it would suggest the club want rid of said player. Which should lead to questions of why from everyone else??

Still haven't watched him at all, is this guy really any good?
I remember people mentioning they watched him and he was pretty anonymous?

They've been watching different games than I have. Seen him a few times Jay, Matic has been excellent, you can see why we're interested in him. Gonna have another look at him tonight playing in the Europa semis.

Yeah, he's a good player - kind of guy we need.
Can never tell who they are watching due to the club being linked with some of his teammates.

Going to be interesting to see how Matic does tonight as Benfica are behind in the tie. Looking forward to having another look at him.

Hmm, read contradicting stories to me then as I'm sure I'd read the other day that they raised his release clause by 5m euroes? Can't find it now though so perhaps not.
Either way I follow a guy on twitter who basically covers all Portuguese football extensively and he can't praise him enough, really thinks he is the top dog and player of the year for Benfica. Writes reports for most matches and he seems to get excellent a majority of the time. Both the Telepgraph and Guardian have reported interest recently so I think there is def something in it, but I think it's probably the same for a number of midfielders who knows which one we'll ultimately try to sign.
I wouldn't mind Newcastle being relegated as I think Cabaye would be a good buy for £10m.

I wouldn't mind Newcastle being relegated as I think Cabaye would be a good buy for £10m. I completely forgot about that. If they go down there'll be a few bargains to be had out of there, especially, Sissoko and Yanga-Mbiwa, in addition to the competition for Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse and co. I'd take Sissoko in a heartbeat, no doubt about it. Actually, come to think of it, we should hope they go down - Sissoko would be a brilliant signing. Box to box, strong in the tackle and a handful going forward in the way that he runs into space.

I thought about him but I've not really seen him play in a box to box role at Newcastle so unsure how good he actually is. No doubt he can run and carry the ball well so certainly a good start. No idea why Newcastle have been playing him in this number 10 role when I don't think he's ever played that before, think it's a case of fitting him in the team without wanting to take Cabaye / Tiote out. I think it's between Newcastle and Wigan for the drop so I hope it is Newcastle, would be happy with Cabaye or Sissoko.

Just watched Matic tonight helping Benfica into the Europa League final.
Gotta say, this guy is superb in my opinion, i've seen him a few times now. You'd almost describe him as an all action type of bustling midfielder for want of a better phrase. He's a big strong guy.
He had Benfica on the front foot from the off, he thinks offensively almost all of the time. The ball broke in a few times in midfield and it won it well, he dominates it in the air in the middle of the park, and his ball retention and distribution is fantastic.
Nearest he came to scoring was in the first half when he broke through to get on the end of a move just outside the box, tried to curl it in with his left foot but put it wide. You could see his intention, he reads the game quite well.
He has this knack of breaking through with pace from midfield. He's as competitive as hell.
Commentators also flagged him up, really impressive. He'll be playing in the Europa League final against Chelsea, barring injury obviously.

For someone of his size he's really pretty decent with his feet. Dembele was a player I wished we'd gone for but Matic looks as good if not better. Ticks all the boxes for what we lack IMHO.
