Very proud to say I was lucky enough to meet the man. He ruffled my hair as a 7 year old when my dad told him my middle name is Trafford. Sir Alex pissed himself at that. A treasured memory. Exactly the sort of story I was hoping for in this thread. Awesome moment, cheers Traff. seconded

you have no idea how Jealous i am right now Traff and how Teary eyed that made me too. Cos after years i had finally gotten enough amount to make it too OT to see us play and watch him , only to hear this today.. so you can imagine Send him a letter. Explain it to him exactly like that, you never what you might get back! A girl who works in my office, her husband played for United as a youth, around the Chartlon, Best, Law era, and he shares Fergie's birthday. Our secretary sent a letter to the club for her husband's 60th I think, it was defs a milestone, last year, and Fergie sent him a personally signed card back. Then had one of the youth academy staff (would recognise the name but can't remember who right now) to organise tickets and a tour for the Liverpool game in January.

yea , good idea , would do that some time , but still Bestie it never will be the same and for guys like me who don't live in or near OT or who can't just like that travel if they wished for-- This is like a bloody body blow that just sucks all the wind out of you , you know. Not done a iota of work today.
Plans remain the same, still though. BTW you sent the letter to United's office or mail to him ( no Idea here) or what

I was incredibly lucky to meet him through my old job and sat next to him for 30 mins in the Victoria Inn in Sheffield. To say i was nervous would be an understatement, i was just glad that i didn't have to do any public speaking otherwise i probably would have squeaked something out and made a tit of myself.
Everyone there knew they were in the presence of greatness.

i did a double take at the headline today
''ferguson retires''
as the day has gone on, I have sort of let it sink in superficially ..but then it hits me again and I cant believe it....it really is like losing a family member! (ridiculous I know but a personal feeling). I have to double take, and actually take in what I am reading....
''Ferguson retires''
we've all dreaded it for years, 11 years plus really.
Its not only that he is our manager and he made us so successful but he represented something more.

I never actually "met" Ferguson, but once after a Carling Cup game against Middlesbrough in 2006ish, he was shaking people's hands at the front of the South stand and he shook mine and ignored my friend (accidentally), even though he was a season ticket holder and he'd just taken me along because a family member couldn't go. The word legend doesn't do Ferguson justice. So many countless memories.

just watching this BBC program, despite the shower of shit panel, there are moments of stock footage and interview footage which are making me feel utterly gutted.

It's apparently not on, according to my Tivo. I'm irritated as I want to record it. I have work tomorrow and didn't sleep last night.

To think, had things worked out differently, maybe if we'd won 4 in a row or a 2nd champions league in 2002, then he would have walked away then. He had intended to do so, and maybe he would have changed his mind regardless, but who's to say.
And if he had left? The favourite to take over back then was Sven. Bloody Sven!
We've had an extra 11 years out of him than we thought we'd get when he announced he would first retire.
In those 11 years he's led us (and I do mean US, the fans) to another 6 titles, 3 league cups, an FA cup, a World Club Championship and another Champions League. He's also brought us Rio, Rooney, Ronaldo, Vidic, Evra, VDS, Carrick, Rafael, DDG, Valencia, RVP, Hernandez, Smalling, Jones. How many of those would be here/have been here if he'd left in 2002?
Been in a bit of a daze for the last couple of days, but you know what, nows not the time for feeling melancholy, it's for celebrating the unbelievable, joyous, exciting ride that he has taken us on.
The best way I can sum it up is simply to say "Thank you Sir Alex. Thank you for everything you have done not just for this football club, my football club, but for me, personally, and the many millions of people, male and female, young and old, worldwide, who have had the privilege of feelings of unadulterated joy that we have no divine right to feel. Thank you for being the one constant in my life, from my youth through adolescence and into adulthood. Thank you for giving me something to smile about when life tried to drag me down. Thank you for making me feel like I have a million and one friends, strangers to me though they be, down to our one common bond."
"Thank you, for everything"

Leave them wanting more. As painful as it is, I think he's done the right thing. He has achieved unprecedented levels of success and built, not just a club, but a dynasty. He will forever be loved by every United fan that was lucky to be alive during his reign, and future generations will hear stories of his time at the club to ensure his legend lives on. That's not a bad legacy to leave behind.
Now I hope that he has a long and healthy retirement. Not many people deserve it more than he does.

Surely one of the biggest tributes is how the ABU's are reacting. His success hurt them more than any retort we fans could ever come back with!

I'll be telling my Grandkids about him one day, & they won't believe how good he was, they say things like "rose tinted glasses".
