www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/new-manchester-united-signing-nick-881451Sir Alex Ferguson has told new striker Nick Powell he can follow Cristiano Ronaldo's route to the first team at Manchester United. Powell is joining United from Crewe in a deal which could be worth up to £6million and Fergie has high hopes for the 18-year-old striker. He believes he can break into his first-team squad and pointed to the success Ronaldo had when he moved to Old Trafford in 2003 at a similar age. Dario Gradi, who is now Crewe's director of football and academy director, says Fergie convinced Powell to sign for him during a chat. "Alex convinced Nick that if he does well enough early doors, maybe if he goes on as a substitute, like Ronaldo in his early days there, then he would pick him," said Gradi. "He said that when Ronaldo first went to United he was fantastic when he went on as a sub and so he picked him and he was equally fantastic when he started a game. "His agent was, quite rightly, concerned whether this was a step too far, too soon, and that he should have a step in between. "But to me that wasn’t an option. You don’t get a chance to go to Manchester United very often and this was a chance I thought he had to take. "If he had asked me I would have said 'Nick you need to go to Manchester United’ which is something I have never done before with a player because I’ve always let them decide." Gradi says Fergie went all the way to Torquay to scout Powell and knew straight away he is a real talent. "Alex Ferguson went to watch Nick play at Torquay I think it was and then he came to watch him at Gresty Road when he didn’t play quite so well," said Gradi. "Anyway he rang me the next day to say do you want to do a deal?’ I said ‘of course, we want to do a deal'. "He said to me, 'I wanted to see him. He is athletic he’s a good size, he’s good physically and he’s bright, he knows where people are around him. His clever with his play, he’s not just twinkle toes'. "Nick’s got a brain and a desire and Alex spotted it on the strength of one outing."

10+ appearances this season? His interview about the goal in the play off final came across as honest but humble. Exactly the type of player Fergie likes. Pipe dreams maybe, but I really wish United could pick out a full line-up without a single media whoring primadona in it.

Nah , i Think Clevs will get to start and on his performance may strike a perm place , if not due to form or injury lose it. Nick will start in the Carling and FA Cups and get in the 10-15 Mins sub against the bottom teams once he shows he is comfortable

Not like he's on twitter everyday declaring that he must start for United next season or he will move to someone who'll offer him more money. Have you seen, like, any interviews with Cleverley? He always comes across as a humble, level-headed guy.

I know some people think Clevs was over-hyped last year but lets not throw the baby out with the bath-water here. Powell looks excellent but Clevs had a major impact on Utd until that knacker Davis took him out. He'd been named in the England squad and would have made his debut. If he's stayed injury free he wuld have almost certainly gone to the Euros as he is a vastly superior player to Henderson. He had been lauded by Fergie in particular for quickening Utd's play, something that had been missing for quite some time. The idea that Powell is going to leap-frog him in 2 years is very far-fetched to me. Clevs will play a big role for Utd this season if he avoids injury. Powell is the one with it all to prove. Cleverley is miles ahead of him right now. Miles.

Hardly. But don't take my word for it:
"He's fresh, he's got a very quick football brain. He's on the move all the time, his positional play is terrific. The boy, as he showed earlier this season, has been a revelation."
Some Scottish bloke said that.

mine and your definition of a major impact must be streets apart. if i'm describing a player who's made a major impact it's about a player who has turned/won games, or been integral to what the team is trying to do, and i don't think either applies here.
