Ozil was never gonna happen given the money they wanted. Especially when we still had rooney.
And of course, cos he wasnt what we really needed

No denying Ozil's quality, but having a high assist count is rather easy when you're creating chances for Ronaldo.

My honest opinion:
Ozil may be a fantastic player and is likely the best player Arsenal currently have. But their main problem was their soft underbelly in front of their keeper. They could have used a top central defender, surprised they didn't go for that Zouma kid, or that Ogbonna lad from Turin.

I too am surprised that Arsenal signed him, they simply didnt need him but its a fantastic deal, £42m for one of the top 5 players in the World is fantastic business in the current market. Still a bit gutted we didnt go for him. Top, top player.

Super player that will improve them going forward but he wont head corners out of the box away at stoke(precisely where le arses issues lie).

Am i the only one who is snickering inside about how Spurs were stiffed on this deal. its been coming out in various media outlets that Spurs wanted Ozil, and that 2 weeks b4 the deadline Madrid's Perez told them he was not for sale. then once Madrid had finalised the Bale deal, Madrid deliberately sold Qzil to Arsenal (rumors are we actually were in for him last minute, and that Spurs still wanted him at the deadline too, so Madrid had options)
The British media have already said that Levy tried to stop the Ozil to arsenal move, and that Madrid were having none of it. i cant help but feel this is nothing short of what Levy deserved. IMHO one major reason for this frenzied and unusual transfer window where a number of the top end clubs (Arsenal, Madrid, and maybe even us if Ed could have pulled his finger out) did big business on the deadline day is due to Spurs' handling of the Bale sale.
as we know the transfer window acts somewhat like a chain reaction when one big move frees up the selling club to move on for the next target, and the buying club feels more free to move on fringe players. If Spurs let Bale go earlier, i'd think Madrid would have let Ozil/Di Maria go earlier in the market too. and who knows what knock on effect those sales would have created for the buying clubs, and the market in general. with a full pre-season with Mardid Carlo may have seen a side to his team that would allow him to make tactical and/or further personnel changes.
by holding up this transfer, Levy was holding up at least 2 Top clubs, and the careers of 2 top players (at least). Perez's response.... Sell Ozil to the team that Levy most wants to depose, Arsenal. i may not like how Madrid operates at times, but i do give props to Perez for how he stuck it to Levy.

Wouldn't it be more like...Ozil wouldn't go to a team not in the CL?

I would think its irrelevant, Ozil would not go to spurs IMO any way. Im not sure I agree that Madrid would of done that on purpose either, its always good business to keep the likes of spurs sweet as its a future feeder club, if anything Levvy probably valued him at say 30 to 35m off the Bale asking price and Madrid new the likes of Arsenal would pay so much more!

If this affects the role that Cazorla has then they are working backwards Cazorla along with Mata was the best creative midfielder in the EPL last term.
Top player, not what we needed. PLAY KAGAWA!
