Ok, gone in with a rejected bid. No fucking about, straight in with the release clause. I'm not gonna pretend that I remember much about this dude but its a signing and for 36m, he must have something about him.

And if any club tries to get the absolute maximum for players (other than spurs) it's Bilbao, given the lack of options they have in finding replacements. See Bayern and Javi Martinez. If we really do want this guy and his clause is 36m then 36m is what we'll have to pay. we'll have to pay more, actually. the release clause is just that, but the taxes are not included. it's not as simple as we'd like to think, as Bayern found out to their dismay with Javi Martinez.i'm not really optimistic about this, especially considering how late in the window this supposed bid has been made, and the fact that it's less than the buyout. it wasn't cut and dry with Bayern n Martinez, and i doubt it would be with this, especially with THIS (Ed) guy that we have doing our business. not optimistic at all. Actually I don't believe that's true. While it is true Bilbao play extreme hardball and dug in to not make the sale, it eventually went through normally. It brought up tax/legal issues, which were eventually resolved. In the end Bayern gave Martinez the fee to buy out himself, though the Spanish tax office had ruled it counted as a transaction between two business and was thus income tax exempt. So all in all, it was purely down to the release clause, no added tax. If we're happy to pay 30mill for him might as well just pay the release, and Bilbao arent ones to negotiate, Hopefully there's still enough time. In this regard Bayern have at least created prior case law, so it would be simpler.

This is all becoming rather pathetic.
We shouldn't be making bids 2 days before the window closes which get rejected. We definitely shouldnt be making first bids at this stage.
What it shows is that there was very poor preparation in July, we should have known not to waste time on Fabregas - and Fellani had a fucking release clause which ended in July, its all last minute rush, something someone does playing football manager
''I must sign someone!! oh look hes a midfielder BID''

In some ways, Bilbaos stance might actually work in our favour. Ed Wood may actually realise that non negotiation means actually that.

Deadline day, as exciting as it is, is for clubs that haven't done their homework properly. Apart from Berb, have we ever really been involved?

That day we signed Berba was great after all the City bullshit. I'd take a 11.59pm announcement at this stage. Give me something to cling too until literally the last second.

Forgot Rooney. So, 2 players in the last 8 years?

Forgot Rooney. So, 2 players in the last 8 years? Well those we succeeded with, who knows how many times we've been 'involved' but not actually successful.

Lets just hope the intial bid was just to test the waters and make it known to the player that United want him. Hopefully even as I type this a second bid offering the full (release clause) ammount is about to land on the Chairman's desk at Bilbao around about the same time an official transfer request from the player also arrives.
Oh sorry, was I day-dreaming there for a minute!!!!!

Would be pretty daft not to pay the extra 6mill euros or whatever it is now.
