Pereira isn't good enough imo, jury still firmly out on Fred, he'll need to show a lot more next season. I'm still holding hope for Pereira but with each passing season it looks less likely. Without going full scouse, maybe next season is the one. The two crunch games in the new year , against liverpool and PSG , Pereira was excellent. He needs a real top midfielder to mentor him. Being alongside prima donnas like Pogba may not be the best for him. I'm not saying he'll be a world beater. But he definitely will do what Herrera did for us and probably more.

Herrera leaving also gives a lot more of a chance to players like Pereira and Fred. Who I believe can make a lot more impact going forward. Pereira isn't good enough imo, jury still firmly out on Fred, he'll need to show a lot more next season. Fred has played a handful of games , as has Pereira. We need to actually see a lot more of them in the first place, forget them showing a lot more...

It definitely feels like we're on the verge of a CM crisis again.

Pereira is plenty good enough for at least a squad role right now. Think he's deserved a few more starts than he's got since the PSG game.

Stewart, correct. A car crash post right there. People are totally missing the initial situation with Herrera, which was the fact that the club effectively let his contract run down and decided to be lazy and not address it, like a proper club would. Pure greed doesn't come into it when Ander was dealing with total ineptitude from the structure and hirearchy within the club. In a way can you really blame Ander when he's been trying to come to terms with a shit-show every week? To those who are saying 'who cares about Herrera', it will be interesting to see reactions on this board when next season commences and Ander's combative edge is totally missing from our midfield. It's then the 'we don't have a competitive midfield' whines might start. No, they're not. Really, they're not? Forget about the debate about possible wages, because that's a different argument. I'm going to be blue in the face attempting to put this point across, again. I'll explain it a different way, so Ander was in a situation of contract limbo if you will initially, because of the gross neglect and spectacular incompetence of the hirearchy within the club, which is rampant. This has continued to this point. The supposedly self proclaimed biggest club in the world let Herrera's and other players contracts run down, couldn't be arsed to sort it, like a proper club would. Hence, due to total inactivity, Ander has decided to move on. How on earth can that even be questioned? What incentive was he ever given to stay? Zero. It's a all round fucking disgrace from the board, the Glazer's, Ed and his cronies and the dogs on the street know it. The end.

Everything on the subject has been said, but just to reiterate what others have already brought up; the notion that Herrera should have been given a bloated, over inflated contract because players A, B, or C have, is mental.
It's that exact attitude that has gotten the club as fucked as it is, wages wise. At some point it has to stop. What's next, does Mata get a new 5 year 250K a week deal? If not, why not? Are you saying Jones or Rojo are better than Mata? Is Sanchez twice the player he is?
At some point, whether it's today, tomorrow or next year, it has to end. Players have to stop being handed extortionate contacts. I mentioned a while back Herrera was one of only a handful of players I'd be actually disappointed to see go, and that hasn't changed. I am disappointed. But the club needs to draw a line in the sand and stop with the contracts, not just continue down the same path.
There are a load of talented young midfielders out there, that have already been mentioned a few pages back. Herrera gone? OK, go get Tielemans now then. His wage will be less than Herrera wanted, and he's 8 years younger than him, and already as good a player. How good will he be at 25? 27? Get Barella as well, same deal with him.
I wish Herrera well, he's done a decent job for us over the last few years (decent, not amazing) but there are younger, better players out there to replace him with.

The smart thing to do is not allow player contracts to get so close to the end date.
They wrongly presumed that it was a formality he would sign. Just because we can get players to renew who are just happy to be here doesn’t mean they all will.

I have literally went through most major journalists writing over the past month on the subject. I even listened to Castles podcast which is a pain beyond belief. They all say we offered Ander between 150 and 200k a week for between 3 and 5 years. His agent wants more. This is his last major contract and he is chasing a big pay off. I dont blame him. Our club is a shambles, but if Ander signed on here on say 200K a week, about to hit 30, with injuries starting to come more and more, he would end up being another albatross around the neck. He would eventually be another hated figure on the bench on big money who we couldn't shift. I loved him and at one point thought he could be a captain for us. But truth be told there are better midfielders out there. Best of luck to him.

Think its clear he does, we just don't know whats gone on behind closed doors. Knowing how Ed operates god only knows whats happened. Presuming its not just wages being the reason for him wanting to leave. Just wish he went to a better club than PSG.

I originally thought it was because we didnt offer him enough years but all reports are saying we offered either 3 year deal with a 4th year option or 4 year deal with 5th year option. We will have to wait until he releases the autobiography before we get the real truth.
