Think from a fan's view the answer lies in the transfers thread Tatty - all the names being mentioned every few are such untested or "worthy" players. But we do have some quality players who'd go for less due to many reasons and we could go for them. Rakitic or Gaby or Shniederlin would do so much good for MF just as much as the pricey ones. We know that Coentrao is available for a knock down price. Matuidi . Fernando are also - all of them offer services we could use at a fraction of a price they'd normally go for otherwise. and that's just the MF

The real question after doing a mass clear-out, is would we ever take the punt on someone like a Suarez? No doubting he was a good player, but he's a knob, and he'd only ever done in the Eredivisie when he moved to Liverpool, for a lot of money. Admittedly, looks a bargain now, but would we tolerate spending £24mill on someone who hadn't cut it at the highest level? Because that's what it's going to take. A big gamble on a potentially golden player. We did it with CR7 but haven't looked like doing something similar since. I think we may already a few potential stars here. A commanding CM or two, a LB and a CB and we are sorted. There is a lot of creative potential coming through, Zaha, Lingard, Cole, Pereira, Januzaj(and maybe Ravel returns?). Young Wilson looks like a goal machine, ice cool in front of goal, then there is W.Keane. Pearson and Powell are also going to be pushing for places. And we have Blackett, M.Keane and Varela to bolster the defence. Gundogan(now) and Koke(Summer) are gettable, as is Controea(now), those 3 signings alone would instantly transform our team IMO. Does Dave have the balls to play the kids? Could Daves negative tactics work using technically excellent talented players? I think they would be wasted on him.

Just that very statement alone could stop top quality players wanting to come, and thats with CL qualification..... Worrying!

Plus he was just coming back after a year out injured and was older than Suarez was. Yet we paid big money for him. It was a big gamble but it certainly paid off.

Interesting article from Robbie Savage on a clear-out of United's squad... www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25665649Reckons Smalling, Fabio, Ferdinand, Fellaini, Anderson, Giggs, Nani, Young, Cleverley, Valencia and Hernandez should all be sold/retire. I think he's wrong on Smalling, Fabio and Hernandez, and maybe Cleverley, but the rest he's spot on with. However he also reckons that United need to spend £200m to overhaul the squad, which would be wonderful but in reality is never going to happen. I would only swap out Pea for PHC and Smalling for Evra and add Petrucci. Although he has a point about a Smalling maybe - statistics wise he haven't progressed much as a footballer since joining from Fulham, which is probably one of the reason SAF used him so sparingly preferring Jones and Evans instead, to around 10-15 matches per season. I wouldn't quit on him yet though, but he needs to be played in his natural position, not that right fullback crap that DD is doing. As far as Cleverley is concerned, his current level of play does not even warrant a place on the bench, let alone in the starting line-up and keeping him in the squad will mean that one of our other young players won't be able to break up in the first team so got to face the facts. I know he's well liked by many fans and members of this board, but he simply is not on par to play for this club and he had more then a fair chance to rise up to the occasion. Its time to move on and let Pearson, Tunni and Powell get a look. Fabio simply wont succeed in this club as things currently stand and we should let the lad go and find his luck elsewhere. Starting 5-6 games per season for 5 years in a row can't do any good for your progress as a footballer.

Only three players (Stewart Downing, Morgan Amalfitano and Ahmed Elmohamady) have completed more open crosses in the Premier League this season than Valencia (16). How many have they all tried. Far out, when I was a whipper snapper we had Ginola, Giggs, Kanchelskis, Sharpe, Overmars and Beckham etc on the wings. Now we have Downing, Valencia and the other crap. What the hell has happened to good wingers? I went back and checked: Nasri - 39/102 for an average of 2 per game Whittingham - 37/140 for an average of 1.9 per game Robert Snodgrass - 35/125 for an average of 2.7 per game Amalfitano - 34/123 for an average of 2.1 per game Downing - 32/111 for an average of 2.3 per game Mirallas - 30/89 for an average of 1.5 per game Navas - 24/91 for an average of 1.3 per game Redmond - 23/96 for an average of 1.3 per game David Silva - 22/53 for an average of 2 per game Walcott - 21/67 for an average of 1.6 per game Lallana - 21/92 for an average of 1.1 per game Adam Johnson - 19/80 for an average of 1.1 per game Arnautovic - 18/54 for an average of 1.4 per game Puncheon - 18/55 for an average of 1.1 per game Jarvis - 18/93 for an average of 1.1 per game Elmohamady - 17/127 for an average of 0.9 per game Tony V - 16/84 for an average of 0.9 per gameBaines - 15/101 for an average of 1.1 per game Assaidi - 14/45 for an average of 1.3 per game Holtby - 13/34 for an average of 1.1 per game Townsend - 13/57 for an average of 0.9 per game Ruiz - 11/45 for an average of 0.9 per game Ashley Young - 9/42 for an average of 0.9 per game Nani - 8/33 for an average of 1 per game

Article might clear up some rumours; strangely, sympathetic towards and pro-Moyes. Kudos for finding it Carbs. I think someone should clear this up - so that at least we know Moyes did his best to retain Rene: He did not stroll into the Carrington training complex and fire Ferguson’s entire coaching staff. He sat down with all of them individually, more than once, and offered Meulensteen the assistant manager’s position that had belonged to Mike Phelan for the previous five years. Promotion, essentially, for the Dutchman.
But Meulensteen didn’t like the idea of Moyes being more hands-on than Ferguson and decided, instead, to pursue his ambitions in management[...].
Moyes wanted to bring his people in but Steve Round became No 2 only after Meulensteen (now in charge at Fulham) opted to leave. To suggest — as some have this week — that the new manager ‘broke up the family’ would appear to be a one-eyed view of events. Will be re-posting this on the Moyes thread.

This smells of a journo being promised exclusives if he puts out a positive story. Rene was offered a promotion? Bollocks.

How do you explain the goal keeping coach??
