Rooney has said that LVG was by far the best coach he ever played under, presumably because he played him no matter how awful he was, whereas Fergie and Jose actually had the temerity to drop him (even then arguably long after they should have).
“Van Gaal is by far the best coach I have worked with - one hundred per cent," he said.
"His tactical skills, his way of preparing and his attention to the finest of details, I found amazing. I admired that in him. I had never looked at stuff like that before.”

One regret I have is that Fergie didn’t have one more season so he could boot his arse out of the door. It was practically gift wrapped for Moyes to do so before he arrived.
