And City, Liverpool, even Cardiff, West Brom walking through our midfield didn't give you a brain hemorrhage? Read reply to Stew. There is a difference between getting into an accident and committing suicide. Signing De Jong now is a stupid move. I agree with the point but if it was a case of no signings this summer or De Jong then I don't see a major problem with him for a season then we can go big next summer, well that's the logical plan. We would end up playing him for the next 6 years and trying to convert him to a fullback.

De Jong has a clear advantage in that he moves faster than an oil tanker.

He is 29 years old. That's not the age to buy players from if we are looking to build a stable squad for the next 5 years. He will run out of steam in another 2-3 and we'll be back in the market looking for a replacement. The role he has to play for us means that he needs to be at peak physical conditioning which he will not be in another 1 year when his body starts to lose strength. Looking great for two games at the world cup is a time honored "put yourself up in the shop window" tradition. It rarely ends well and for us it almost never has. Remember Poborsky? It just doesn't make sense. It makes sense for me at least if you invest in an up and comer instead of 29 year old. Oh and not to mention, he is an absolute tool. RVP? He was 29 when we bought him. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying De Jong is the answer. He's a lot better than nothing. He's also played at a high level for countless years, these two games at the WC are hardly like an unknown Algerian we take a punt on after playing one good game. No Stew. I don't see it that way. A striker like RVP has a different role to play than de Jong would. RVP's game revolves around finesse, guile, spotting an opportunity and being absolutely precise and intelligent. de Jong's game, for the role he would have to adopt, would revolve around stamina, strength, fitness, endurance, toughness, the ability to rough it out with other midfielders etc. Basically his role needs a constant level of physical fitness. And physical abilities only wane with age. Not saying a striker doesn't need fitness. Rooney being prime example. But it isn't as physically demanding as the role of a CDM.

Ah yeah, I know that. I suppose for me he was a non starter as in my head he was 32 or something, so I was suprised to read he's 29 and thought 'why not?' For a season or 2.
I genuinely think Louis has Strootman as his main target (rightly so, baffling he wasn't bought last summer and an expensive mistake.) so may be prepared to wait till January. Strootman will do a bit of everything well and Pearson/Rothwell/Powell will be given a shot pre-season to stake a claim as well. Still think Blind is likely as a holding mid where he plays all the time for Ajax.

All upto Ed and Louis. Fuck yeah to Pearson and Powell. Also Saidy.

Fact of the matter is van Gaal will want players for the here and now, not potential that'll come good in 3-4 years. He'll be gone then, he does have a history of leaving a strong legacy behind him but he'll also want to be seen as a success in his own right.

Anyone is better that nothing !i don't give a shit if he is an ex blue or not if he adds to the squad then fuck it . i really hope the apparent lack of activity regarding transfers is just united keeping their plans under wraps. But knowing united in all reality Ed Woodward is probably sat in his big plush office sat with his fingers in a Chinese finger trap desperately trying to get out
starting to think this is going to be another fuck up of a summer and another shit season , please prove me wrong Ed you plonker

To be honest, for £6m we couldn't really go wrong, he's an instant upgrade on Cleverley/Fletcher/Fellaini and would bring qualities we've been lacking for a long time. The mobility, tenacity and the ability to basically do all the dirty work could be a great asset for us, especially against the better teams. We know exactly what we'd get and he'd fit in pretty much any system LvG decides to play so it's pretty much a no brainer for me.
If we are going to be realistic, what other options are there for a quality, mobile DM? Very rare to be honest, and whilst I'd like to have seen us push through with Carvalho, £35m or thereabouts is an astronomical amount of money for a 22 year old with one year of experience in the Portuguese league. He isn't the huge signing everyone wants, but he could be a very shrewd buy and a very good player for 2-3 years whilst we find a younger replacement.

If Carvalho is off the list (and I can't wait to see him playing for Madrid in two years time) then De Jong now with Strootman in Jan/summer 15 is an plan. Maybe throw in Blind.
I think people should look at Chile/Holland in an hour. Forget he's a twat, forget City and just watch him. I think you'll be suprised. I certainly was.
