I'm prepared for the abuse but I think we should buy him. Hard as nails, gets about the pitch and can play ball too. Showed his class tonight against Spain, he dominated the midfield.
He's something we've been missing in midfield, a real presence.
Discuss.......(or shoot me down)

As a player he's not bad, he could certainly do a job and I was pretty surprised City let him go.
But he is a dick. A massive one. I couldn't take to him in a United shirt, he's just too big an arsehole.

He is a twat but his performance against Spain does prove to me how important a player of his ilk is against sides that like to dominate possession. He put in a serious amount of work, his closing down and harrying was immense (as was De Guzman's in fairness) and makes you wonder if we've been guilty of snobbishness re a destroyer in midfield. Would 09 and 13 be different against Barca if we had someone doing a De Jong role? Almost certainly in the case of 09. I suppose that would have been Fletch's role unfortunately. Looking at last night I'm much more hopeful that Louis will fix our midfield. If he'd tried to play those tactics with the midfielders we currently have the score line would be reversed most likely. In short- not DeJong but a younger, less scrotish version would do nicely!

I personally feel inspite of his denials, Carvalho is more gettable than Vidal

Like no way in hell would that be something I would be okay with, personally. Now a player who does his job, doing the dirty work? I have been wanting someone like that for a long long time. Carvalho would be excellent as would Vidal. Vidal would be the best choice because along with his defensive work-rate he is also an excellent forager in attack. But I don't think he is gettable. Which is why we would do well to seal Carvalho.

The combo between Robben and RRVP was unstoppable Their midfield stopped Spain from controlling the game. They prevented Alonso and Xavi from dictating matters by pressing them all over the park. They also provided the shield to stop Spain getting at a very inexperienced Dutch defence. I'm not talk offensively, I'm talking from a defensive standpoint. I would have thought that was fairly obvious from my post.

De jong my arse. Carvalho/Schweinsteger/Vidal midfield trio would be orgasmic.

Yeah I get that but it seems to me people only ever talk about the cm when a team plays well these days. Wingers are becoming a joke even though Robben was amazing. Just thought I'd throw in the fact that Robben and RVP were much more important to the win.

Absolutely. But it just hammered home the need we desperately have for a mobile centre mid that can win the ball.

I think he is nearly exactly the sort of player we need and have been missing for a long time. We need somebody mobile who can press, tackle, close down and generally get stuck in, I think the main problem with De Jong is that he offers very little else and is purely defensively minded. That's not a bad thing in certain game types (when you are under a lot of pressure), but week in week out against teams you need to break down more is needed. If we can find a similar type of player but a few years younger then that'd be perfect. Vidal is the obvious choice but that seems very unlikely so I'm struggling to think of other options?
