www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29026398"They have probably lost the way of Manchester United a little bit," Phelan told BBC Sport. Now, rather than produce, it may be the case where they are buying in. He added: "Someone like a Danny Welbeck has been part of United's identity and that has been broken. What will happen in the future now, nobody knows but that thread has been broken now." I get his point but it's also called evolution. Football, like everything, is changing and as sad as it can be to leave old, familiar ways behind, it has to be done to avoid becoming also rans.

The truth is that if you are good enough you will get a chance - he got his chance and never fulfilled his potetial now it's time for someone else
It's sad that he's a local lad but that should never guarantee anything - especially not a place in a United team when there are better options
Getting £16M now is a lot better than him spending a year on loan and coming back at the same level

Welbeck will be Arsenal's top scorer. Not that hard as the only prolific goalscorer they have plays deep midfield

I think Phelans missing that Welbecks asked to leave twice in several months.
This took the sheen of a great window for me. I really won't be surprised to him develop into a top striker, a lengthy dose of being the main man upfront will really help him. When played upfront his stats are actually rather good. If he can step up the next level, we'll regret seeing him go.
I guess at the end he didn't fancy a fight for a place. All this talk of us not wanting him to go to a top 6 side and blah blah, all I could think was another unambitious English player scared to go somewhere like Valencia, or Napoli or Schalke for a year. Instead he'd rather stay in England and burn his bridges.

Welbeck will be Arsenal's top scorer. He's their only healthy striker aside from Sanogo. I'd hope so.

Neutrals are saying Arsenal overpaid for Welbeck, for what it's worth

True - he got the hump because he was getting played out of position -- but did he really have the ability to jump ahead of RVP, Rooney and Chico? - and now Chico is out of the squad Falcao comes in Being realistic we got £16M for someone who would spend most of this season on the bench - great business IMO I don't want to see him fail (for the sake of England) but would have preferred it not to be a rival if he does do well

Bit sad to see him go 2bh. Wish him the best of luck. Was a tad surprised to see him go to a rival side though.
At least we got a decent value for him.

I've got to say, I'm really sad to see Danny leave. I can't really understand the pocket of United fans who are saying "fuck him, he's shit". He's ours though isn't he. Our Dan.
You feel different about your own players. The ones you've watched grow up into senior players. A lot of people on this forum spent years being excited for Danny's major breakthrough in our first team. I was so excited for him at the start of his first proper season here and he featured in that great start with goals against Spurs and in the battering of Arsenal. Always got a different feeling when he scored for us than I get with the other players. I was even buzzing when he scored his first goal for England.
It's really made me realise how much football has changed. I understand that we can't make room for everyone like we could under Fergie, and that he was a genius in getting the maximum out of players and keeping everyone happy. It just seems like Fergie left, I blinked, and then when I opened my eyes, the lads who won the league with us 15 months ago weren't good enough anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited about Falcao. But I doubt I'll ever have the same affection for him in the long term that I have for the Longsight lad who scored at the Bernabeu and gave Bayern hell. I suppose even from watching Dan as a youngster, I always thought he'd be a lifer here. He'll be back though. When his careers over, he won't be watching games at the Emirates, he'll be in the crowd at Old Trafford. Cos he's ours.
