The Dutch coach has come under fire in the wake of Welbeck’s departure with many citing the sale as proof the club has abandoned its famed youth policy.
Van Gaal dismissed this suggestion and said the reason the United youth product was sold was because he was not up to the standard set by Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Falcao.
"Danny Welbeck had been here since he was nine, but after he came back from Sunderland, he does not have the record of Rooney or Van Persie, and that is the standard," said the United boss.
"And we have Falcao. Today, in training, he had one chance and it is a goal. That's why we had to let him (Welbeck) go.”
Nice lad good footballer but he ain't no top striker.. Sorry but it's a simple as that

Comments I'm hearing from relatives and friends in Manchester, including Bitters fans, Welbeck's transfer has caused a lot of local resentment towards the club. He seems to be a cause célèbre suddenly, which clearly he wasn't with us. Somehow I think this saga has legs. Where I think this will cause us most harm is regards to Arsenal's poor performance against lessor clubs. If he gets them those extra points it will make our job harder for 4th. He's also slotting into a settled side which gives them another advantage. Overall if he had to go I wish it had been out of the PL and certainly not to that lot. Please. I am sick of hearing this shit about Wellbeck and it being used as a stick against the club and it's youth policy. City have one Belgian import who has played at their academy for 2 years and a total of 75 mins of first team football since the begimming of last season. They have had to threaten UEFA with legal threats to get them to bend the rules and allow them to play more imports in the 21 man Euro Squad than they should be allowed Chelsea have 1 academy player who came through the ranks **15 years ago***, John Terry We currently have 7 in the first team Squad and we have let go a handful who were playing regular footbal last year. Wellbeck was not good enough, 1 goal every 5 games is not good enough to compete with Rooney/RVP/Falcao and the managemt saw James Wilson as having more potential from the academy. He was treated well enough and with respect by the fans and the club under different managers. He has done very well foir himself good luck at Arsenal Did he thank the Club, fellow players and the supporters at United> I'm not sure didn't hear anything from him??

I'm sure the media wouldn't be moaning about letting him (and Clev) go if they were foreigners we'd bought and never made the grade The key words are "never made the grade" - are we supposed to keep inferior players just because they came through the academy? We have plenty more where they came from

I think we're at cross purposes. My comments were about local Manchester rumours about the move, that the story has longevity, that I preferred him out of the EPL, and that Welbeck will get points for them that they lost last year possibly making life difficult for us. I think that is a lot more about us than Welbeck. I haven't to my knowledge personally attacked the club directly or especially the youth policy. Indeed I don't really understand what the youth policy is anymore to either attack or endorse it. You make some interesting points but my slant was a Manchester boy who went through the academy, was allowed to go and the local ramifications. It seems others have thought the same including Neville. As to what the Bitters or Chelski or racist Terry do I am entirely indifferent. Never quite understood the thanking issue and what it has to do with going to Arsenal - it seems to me there was haste on both sides to get him out/or to leave. Personally I find the haste and the last minute antics a strange set of decisions that might backfire on us.

I would prefer he didn't go to Arse too, but I think the club acted fairly in his interests. It was his decision to leave as he was fourth choice striker, but as VG says it gives the opportunity to another youngster, Wilson and it's up to him and others to take their chances

What happens when Giroud is fit and he's either on the bench or playing wide again?
Won't be a dream move then

Won't be a dream move then welbeck could easily lead their line for years. i don't rate giroud at all. nice touch, but not a top striker and not mobile so doesn't fit the arsenal philosophy. welbeck is an ok finisher, quick and powerful and extremely skilfull. i think he'll do very well at arsenal.

No problem, I didn't take it badly just thought we we 'talking' across each other. Its easy to misconnect on context. I was critical of Welbeck last season and found his play a bit frustrating. You might be aware to night that LVG has admitted to selling him because he was not up to it. I still think this will backfire but that this season, shit will happen until we get back to the habit of winning.

I don't see Danny getting the starting pos personally. I must just not rate him as high as some on here. Even Scholes said he won't ever be a 20 goal a season player. In a team that only has one forward what good is that?

Phil I agree with you on Bambi and the perception, however misguided, that his move appears to have created. What I am really afraid of, as you have already alluded to, is the possibility that Wenger may improve him (as he has an established record of doing) and the ramifications this may potentially have as far as the race for forth is concerned. His finishing is scattergun rather than rifle, there is no doubt about that, but he has enough raw attributes that can be honed by a coach like Wenger and a team like Arsenal, who have a set, fluid pattern of play.
