Perhaps the quickest way to showcase the fact that Rooney should not be in the starting XI is for him to wear the armband. That brings a focus on him from fans and the press that is different than any he might have had before.

2013/14 Prem Season 29Games
17Goals 10 assists
Not bad considering the way we played last year under a new manager. I say lets wait and see how he gets on in the next couple of months before we talk of " selling him"

I clicked on the top opition as it was really the only choice, however no one is a nailed on starter and If rooney is getting outperformed by someone in the club then he should be on the bench. Propbelm is over the last year Rooney has been the best of the worst.

Agreed. Everyone who played last season is on the hot seat and worthy of the same criticism.

Propbelm is over the last year Rooney has been the best of the worst. The thing is it is not how he plays in terms of stats...it is what he brings to the team and how he affects the overall balance. IMHO he doesn't stick to his job in staying up front...he comes back too much and interferes with midfield, which has the knock on effect of leaving the midfield nobody to pass the ball forward to because Rooney is either standing next to them or sometimes behind them... Without Rooney we have a number of far better options and formations...with Rooney, we are limited and one dimensional...he may have been our best of the worst last season but he is a long way from the best of the best this season...simply put we don't need him and are probably better off without him...and that is in purely football terms notwithstanding his general c*ntishness...

I say lets wait and see how he gets on in the next couple of months before we talk of " selling him" agree with some others here. good stats for him, but by his very presence in the team, he might have got 17 and assisted 10 and we may have scored 75 goals altogether, but his presence disrupts and unbalances the team and prevents other players from fitting in to such an effect that dropping/selling him and playing our best fitting players we may scored 95 goals and the 27 goals he was directly responsible for would be replaced and exceeded by a more comfortable team with players that fit a number of formations.

Agree we should have sold him and he's not a good enough passer to be full time CM but...
A good manager should be able to get move things around to compensate for his best player's tactical weaknesses. Ancelotti somehow managed to win the CL with Ronnie being completely averse to defending.
Moyes' idea of tactical adjustments were having the wingers switch sides.

He's shite, fat, Scouse. But we're stuck with him. He's our Captain, and we all have to forget the past, It was Stretford who made him ask to leave/get a fat contract.Leave him alone now guys.
Just kidding, he'll be benched within 5 gmes

I think our main problem with Rooney is going to be finding a club daft enough to match his wages.

With the class we have now he'll be under pressure to perform - if he doesn't there is no doubt LVG has the balls to bench him - captain or not
And the same goes for anyone who doesn't perform - not just Rooney

I think the Captaincy does little to guarantee Rooney a start. LVG doesn't suffer fools lightly. I think he gave rooney the armband to try and get more out of him. It hasn't happened and hence we buy Di Maria and Falcao. The writing is on the wall unless we see the Rooney of 2004.

Now we have some opitions and I agree if Rooney is holding us back then he deserves to sit on the bench. Last year I don't think that was the case due to RVp's fitness, Kagawa struggled all year, Welbeck couldn't find his scoring boots, Hernandez didnt have enough presence to build a team around him and Mata was a new signing. I hear what some of you are saying and I agree his first few games this season havent been the most convincing, however as I said before he's a proven goal scorer at this level, he's the captain and I think he deserves a fair chance. Lets see how he does with the new lads and then we can judge him.
