We have first pick? Was that part of the deal when we sold him?

If Vidic does leave, we need a guy like Shawcross who will battle in the air and plays that physical style. He'll be a compliment to Evans.

I do think he is better than Evans I'd seriously disagree with that.

I'd seriously disagree with that. Id say they are on a par. Until recently I'd seriously disagree with that. Yes, Jonny has had a wobble of form, but who hasn't in our team this term? Evra, and that's about it. Don't say Rooney because he went a couple of games without scoring early on in the season . Evans is already a good defender, just needs to get his composure back. I do like Shawcross, but with bringing Smalling in, aswell as having a strong youth contingent (which many seem to have over-looked) such as Chester and Cathcart to name a couple, I'm not sure we need to 'Pique' him yet.

Curious. I'd probably be inclined to agree with Bestie. Evans is shaping up to be a brilliant defender for us, even though he is gong through a bit of a sticky patch at the moment. I hope it's mostly down to playing in a chopped and changed back line and not an indication that he can't step it up without Rio/Vidic alongside.
I asked the question because it seems that once a teams defence starts going their ability to win things follows. When Chelsea were winning the league Terry and Carvalho were the best centre backs in the league. Ditto Rio and Vidic during our double winning season.
Both Rio and Vidic will need replacing within two years. Are we going to pay premium prices for ready made replacements given the state of our finances? Why not repatriate a young player like Shawcross before the price gets too steep and give him time to bed in before Rio and Vidic leave?

Well if Vidic is sold then we need a repacement, because as has been seen during these past few months, we can't rely on a Evans/Brown partnership, and Rio can't be trusted to stay fit and Smalling is to young and inexperienced to be relied on too heavily imo. Personally I think he will be sold, and even though I have a soft spot for him, I wouldn't really be too dissapointed as I think we have seen the best of him, and the quoted price of 20-25 million is too good to turn down for a player on the wane. We are being linked with a few CB's because of this, David Luiz, Bruno Alves, Chiellini, Kjær and Shawcross to name those most often linked. Of that group I'd prefer Kjær as I have seen him in a few games for Denmark and he seems class (too bad he is a liverpool fan ). Wouldn't mind Shawcross though, but the figures that have been quoted for him (15-20 mill) mean he will never be value for money, so if an established international like Kjær can be had for 11 million (his rumoured buy-out clause) the best defender in Serie A can be had for 15-20 million which is rumoured to be Chiellini's valuation then I can't see us going for Shawcross.

Never struck me as having much in the way of pace. Similar to Vidic though in that he puts his foot and head in and dominates the box.

Yes similar to Vidic, Ugly as hell, but hard as f**k!
Saying that I saw an interview with Boy George on Jonathon Ross and he said he had pics of Vidic (or videsch as he pronounced him) on his prison cell wall.

Vidic is actually a very, very handsome guy. The reason I know this, is that a buxom young lass told me that I looked like I could be his brother, or at least his cousin. Therefore, Vidic = Beautiful man.

Well... I'm one for holding my faith to Evans. I think he will take reign after Rio or Vidic. As for Smalling, that can only be said next season / seasons after this.
Shawcross... if it's really true that we have first hand on him for 12million, I'd say keep him at Stoke City first and watch him. If it happens that Rio retires / Vidic leaves and we can't replace them with Smalling or Evans; then sign him. 12mil for a solid English centre back's a good deal.

More rumours about that Fergie is keen on resigning him.....presumably he couldnt tempt Prunier to come coach Evans in the art of defending. ;D
Hes looked solid for Stoke at times, but i just wonder wether there was a reason we let him go in the first place tho. I mean you compare him to Pique - it was obvious that Pique would turn into a top defender, but at the time, Evans looked a brilliant prospect too and Pique wasnt willing to wait around, so it was better to cash in on him, but Shawcross.....hes hardly done an awful lot at Stoke really....
