Not sure. Why did SAF let him go in the first place? Scores yesterday and was named MOTM. He might play 2 bummers the next 2 matches and then he is forgotten about.

The first few pages of this thread are.....interesting! I merged all the Shawcross threads (about four of them). Some people hadn't done a simple Thread search ...

Van Gaal - and Sir Alex for that matter - require a CB with foot skill. A United CB should be able to trap a pass and turn it up the line. As good as Shawcross was on the goal against United, his dire lack of passing and his amazingly limited ability to play out of a corner are reasons to pass on him. No doubt the lad can wrestle a CF down on a free kick/corner. And no doubt he is a significant upgrade to Evans and Carrick in the air. However, a tall bruising "tackler" will get red after red playing for United. Vidic saw his fair share of borderline calls go against him. Imagine Shawcross would do worse.
I say pass on a mediocre CB - United have Evans and Smalling and Blackett for that - and push for a genuine world beater.

It was both Jones and Smalling who were at fault for the majority of Stoke's aerial chances? He's 20?

I rate him a distant 3rd to Smalling and Jones - not suggesting that either Smalling or Jones are good enough. As for Blackett - he needs to play before Evans at the moment. Better passer, better ball defender - Evans positioning on crosses is usually better than Blackett - and a natural left peg. On current form I would rate Blackett as mediocre. Good enough to start for Hull, not good enough to start for United. Point is, keep Blackett and ship Evans for a genuine world beater CB. If that sort of CB does not show up - promote Blackett and give Evans a rest.

Could and should have been bought in the summer. Still can and do it now.
Even if say we sign a Godin or Hummels, Shawcross will be a quality squad player. Massive upgrade on Smalling, Jones and Evans who all should be let go.
2 CBs, Rojo, McNair and Blackett is what I'd love to see.

Why have we become so negative on Blackett. The lad had just 1 below par performance, and he has turned mediocre? Jesus.

The expectation has to be higher at Old Trafford. Blackett and McNair have a future no doubt. However, Blackett looked a little shaky last outing and has not shown me enough to say "ship Evans" regardless of another CB coming in. I think Blackett and Jones are the future CB pairing for Giggs with McNair playing as a CM.
