The sad sack moments:
I thought giving Rooney the captaincy and playing him in the midfield might work - hope springs eternal.
Argued that AdM was a crazy buy when our defence and midfield was full of holes - but then persuaded by counter claims he was a long term prospect.
At various times believed Welbeck, Clevs, Chico, AJ, Evra, and Rafa should have stayed - not entirely reversed that opinion.
Liked Anderson - still do.
A money down bet on Moyes to get a CL result away in Greece - why I don't gamble.
After the treble, announced we would overtake Scouses CL record - beer boasting.
Believed Webb would be our future after his goal at home to Arsenal - debut over confidence.
The combination of Wilkins and Robson would enable us to dominate the league - desperate times.
Held Fergie responsible for the Glazers successful takeover - ignored the money.
I thought Ronnie might be persuaded to stay out of loyalty - silly me.
Overnight anger with Eric for kicking a fan and getting sent off but then saw the replay next morning on breakfast news - Francophile.
After 9 straight wins I thought we were on for the league under racist Ron - a mirage in the wilderness (aka Scouseism).
1974, believed it was impossible for mighty us to be relegated - angry young man.

One of the obvious things coming from this is don't be too quick to judge players, particularly young ones. We're seeing this with Memphis right now.

I thought Powell would be a box-to-box beast come 2015..
ADM, I thought he was a world beater after that all-Madrid CL final. Top 5 player in the world I thought. Wtf happened?!

In 2 years I fullly intend to dig up the 'told you so' thread and post about how good Memphis is. Saying that, there are some players where you just know straight away. Bebe, Gibson etc.

Darren Fletcher. In his earlier years he wasn't that great and I always wanted him to be the first out the door, was convinced he was total shite and would never make it. Turned out to be a really solid player for us, especially in that 2008 season where he was an integral part of the midfield.
Falcao. Thought he would be absolutely lethal up front for us, turned out to be a lame duck (although in fairness he clearly wanted to do well, loved being at the club and seemed like a top guy). I then thought it was a mistake letting him go but he's been total gash for Chelsea too.
Chris Smalling. Again I thought he would never make it at United and was massively in Phil Jones' shadow. I never thought he would be anything more than a decent rotational player, but he's gone full beast mode.
Karel Poborsky. Lightning pace and skill, I was convinced he would be bloody amazing for us. He showed some flashes of excellence but it never really worked out at United. Same with Veron, who was a sublime player but just couldn't adjust to English football and couldn't break the midfield of Keane and Scholes. I suppose not proven wrong with those but more a case of just not living up to expectations.
Djemba-Djemba. Great debut with some crunching tackles and fantastic energy, I briefly thought we may have found a successor to Keane. Turned out to be a genuinely fucking awful player.
Special mention for Ferguson thinking Alan Smith would be the new Roy Keane.
Oh and people mentioning Jonny Evans. Honestly I think there was a time, over a few seasons, where he genuinely looked like our next big leader in defence. So many great performances paired with Ferdinand or Vidic, but it seems he wasn't quite all that. Failed to step up when finally given the proper responsibility, instead just fell apart and the responsibility seemed to break him.

Evans caught the injury bug with us and on the pitch lost all confidence. He's still an excellent player for Northern Ireland.
I think a lot of slack can be given for the judgement on young players. They can fail to make it for any number of reasons. It might not be that they don't have the ability. (I'm thinking of Morrison as a perfect example of undeniable talent but lacking elsewhere, or even Kagawa who is a genuinely good player that didn't fit.)

I was worried about who got the better deal/player when we signed Ronaldo, and Arse signed Reyes.

How could I possibly trump that? Nice one Phil and great topic Rustin!
I remember Neil Webb. A brilliant, creative midfielder at Forest at a time when English football was generally a maelstrom of dross in terms of flair and quality. He appeared tailor made for us!
I think we were all extremely angry at Ed's now perceived ineptitude over the Pedro deal, compounded by the Spaniard's impressive start against the Baggies and LvG's namedropping and comments about speed and creativity. So I hold my hands up on that one! I impulsively assumed Pedro would be the famed 'missing link'.
Also a shout for Mike Smalling, who has been bloody outstanding, a rock. I was firmly of the opinion, as were many here, that both he and Jones should have their brittle bodies sent to the knackers yards and that we needed at least Hummels plus 1. His antics in the corresponding derby last year reinforced my views. But he is proving me wrong with every game so long may his phoenix rise.
