We had the stuffing knocked out of us last Sunday. It was a nervy dull affair. Not really too surprising. Christmas phrasing. Starring United as the festive Turkeys & Pep as Bernard Matthews

I'm pretty sure Lukaku is halfway to his total goals tally of 26 in all competitions last season on 13, with 21 league matches and potential cup runs in all the major competitions still on the cards. If he scores 25-30 (+??) goals for us this season, in his very first year at United, I'll be really impressed. If none of them are against city, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs or Arsenal, I won't be. Put it this way, if he scores 30ish and we end up with two trophies (other than the league as it seems gone unless City absolutely fall apart) I'd still be pretty pleased - regardless of having not scored against those teams. I'm convinced that'll come with time as he's still only 24. One of our major issues over the last few years has been putting away the lesser teams, whilst we were perfectly capable of raising our game to the big occasion (See VG's stats). If we're not able to win the league because of City's freakish season then at least end up with a decent cut of the silverware. At least, that's how I think Jose will see it at some point/if not already. Cup competitions are unpredictable, and easier to win than the league. You never know...

I know what you mean Jay but it would be nice if we would stand up to the bigger teams and Lukaku is a big part of that...if he starts sticking a few away against them then he throws off the 'flat track bully' tag and helps put some of those teams in their place at the same time...win-win... Having said that, I am happy that we are putting the smaller teams away even if it isn't always pretty...last seasons draws were expensive...

Winning something was always going to be important after Ferguson went. Any genuine silverware (so not the Charity Shield, sorry Jose) was a requirement just to keep our reputation as winners. For me the prize will always be the title. I value it even above the European Cup. If we won in Europe but didn't win the League I would honestly be slightly disappointed. It's already been the longest we haven't won the League in 25 years, and Liverpool (and us, originally) are evidence of just how difficult to be to win it again once you have fallen out of the habit. I don't care if city are just better, find a way to beat them and beat them. Lukaku could score us 60 goals and if they didn't result in us winning the League I'd be annoyed. The title is what matters. I'm as obsessed with it as Fergie was with Europe.

Fair play and fair points. I'd personally be more appeased by the European Cup, particularly in a season where there's an 11+ point gap between them and everyone else, a year after we'd finished 6th. Add that to our terrible luck/fortune in this competition it'll likely always feel like a bigger priority to me until we get somewhere near where we should be in terms of United's tally. Having previously finished 5th, 4th and 7th since Sir Alex's reign I'd still classify 2nd as progress if that included the European Cup

With Bestie on this one.
The league is your bread and butter. If you win that, there's no denying you're the best. In Europe, you can fluke a win. Scouse in '05, Porto before that. Although recently, that trend has been bucked a little.
Plus, it was the catalyst for the success most of us grew up with in the 90's (1990 Cup Final aside), so it'll always be important to me, as the league is the first trophy I remember genuinely jumping up and down for winning like a goon.

Winning the league as soon as possible has to be the absolute biggest priority - it’ll almost be like a system restore for the club. It’s already been 4 seasons and unless City have a remarkably bad 2nd half of the season it’ll be 5.
While there are big differences, I would like to see Jose approach this City team the same way Ferguson treated Chelsea when Jose arrived to England and absolutely blew everyone away. I remember thinking “how the hell are we going to beat this arrogant prick?” We did, and we can do it again, but it’ll take a lot of commitment from the players, Jose and the board.

Don't get me wrong though, the league should and is rightly our priority from the off every season. I simply mean that in this particular set of circumstances this season the European Cup would still mean a huge amount even if we miss out on the league. There is something about that trophy that will always have a certain mystique about it.
