Bit like the transfer committee that was stuck a roaring success for the Scum? Brilliant idea. Wish Ed would stop trying to reinvent the cunting wheel and just hire a top class DoF.

As long as they have full authority to confirm and push through a deal then I have no problem with it. The only issue will be the meddling from Ed and the Board and whether or not they require a vote on the deal. If a board approval requirement remains, it will be the same old shit but with just more chefs in the kitchen.

What happens if we appoint them and Ole gets the boot in the next 12 months do they walk with him? Might be awkward? My guess is no, as that would defeat the object of the article.

That's the dilemma though isn't it? Do you get an experienced DOF from outside the club, he'll know the role better but will he get the club? Or do you get someone with the United DNA and let them grow into the role? It's a tough one tbh, we tried at manager to hire previously successful guys and hope they replicate it here (LVG and Mourinho) which didn't work, if we hire a previously successful DOF does he just try to replicate what he did with a previous club and not fit with the United culture either? We'd really need to know what said DOFs job spec is to say one way or the other. This DNA thing needs to stop seriously. Fergie has gone. We have to move on , we have Ole, Phelan, Butt, Carrick and god knows how many ex players who are ambassadors. I have no issue with a few ex players being around but this is ridiculous. The best man for the job. Maybe Gill should step in and help Ed because he clearly doesn’t know what he’s doing. The one figure from our past I wouldn’t say no to is Carlos Quieroz who was a very good coach for us. I would have had him in over Phelan in the first place. He knows his onions. Yeah good shout on Queroz, I'd rather he was on the training pitch though.

Well according to Sky, Paul Mitchell is also on the short list. He would definitely be the ideal external appointment. Paul Mitchell would be ideal. knows the club as he's a mancunian and I think (hopefully) a Red. he knows what it takes to be a DoF and is proven in that role. What has Paul Mitchell done as a DOF? I thought he was only being looked at when Poch was being linked to the manager job because they'd worked together before.

Think the intention is that they stay for continuity, and identify a managerial talent that fits Uniteds style. What is our style? British and Irish/homegrown nucleus in a mostly young squad; wingers; attacking football, particularly fast counter-attacking; justified swagger; never being beaten. Not difficult really.

Attacking, expansive football. Emphasis on width, hard work and giving youth a chance. After from the class of 92 Fergie didn’t bring through that many players really. Brown was the stand out one after that period. It became increasingly difficult to break through in the late 2000 period hence one of the reasons Pogba buggered off. The relying on fast pacey wingers idea won’t happen until we actually get some on both sides of the pitch. Having fullbacks who rarely get forward to put in a decent cross doesn’t help if we want to go back to this system.

O'Shea, Fletcher, Cleverly, Evans. As we aren't just about promoting from our youth teams it is about giving other young prospects a platform. Rooney was in his teens, as was Ronaldo. Jones was, what, 18, when we signed him? Saying we didn't retain that identity right to the end of Fergie's reign is complete revisionism. You can try to strawman the discussion back to signings all you like. Your question was, 'What is our style?' - people have answered you.

Smalling was what, 21 when we signed him? Varela was signed by Fergie as a kid. Anderson was 20, Nani 21. I could go on... As for British kids in the latter Fergie years, no one stood out. If he was still in charge now, he'd be rubbing his hands in glee at the embarrasment of riches he could choose from. Hudson-Odoi Rice Maddison Gomes Sancho Hell, he would've had a cheeky go to get Rhian Brewster I bet. This doesn't even include young foreign talent he would've been hell-bent on getting. Neves Jota De Ligt Tielemans Let's not smear Fergie with rotten revisionism to fit a current narrative.

But Doherty, Atkinson, Busby and Fergie had different styles from what I remember. Isn’t this really Fergies style we are taking about? He was here so long it’s what most of us remember as United? Why do fans expect a continuation of this? Had Pep come here with a totally different way of playing and been successful we wouldn’t have been reminiscing about the good old days and how it was then. I liked how we played under Fergie but it’s not a prerequisite for how his predecessors should imo. We are in danger of being fixated on something that was unique to one man.
