The player in question hasn't contributed this year. Not season, calender year. It's the manager's decision to keep playing Lingard and and starting him. Ole has no excuse. What are the alternatives?
Gomes is too young and it's a little too early to be turning to such an inexperienced player this early in the season. Mata's lack of pace is an issue for the system and he's well past his best no matter how much people like to hang on to some hope he can still be a player for us.
Pereira gets roundly criticised by most on here as being not good enough. Not by me mind, he's the one I'd be playing instead of Lingard but can hardly throw too much blame at Ole seems most consider him to not be good enough.
Other option is to play an extra man in midfield and move Pogba further forward. Those who can play are Pereira (not good enough), Matic (shite) and Fred who may improve (I think he will) but has shown no concrete signs that he will. He likely wanted a quality #10 in the window but didn't get one, so planned for the season with the squad he has and whether we like it or not (I don't) Lingard is probably the player who fits most in terms of the way he wants to play. It makes sense from Ole's point of view to not drop him after after 2 games of the season, 1 where he was actually ok and the other where he was shit.
As I say, if Ole persists and Lingard continues to be shit over the next handful of games then he will have to start tinkering with the lineup and if he doesn't, any criticism will be justified as he has to look like he's at least willing to try something different, even if there is no guarantee it offers more. I personally think Pereira is the best option, he's just a better footballer and not short on workrate and energy.
Play Pogba behind the striker. He is doing no favors to Pogba by playing him in a position his effectiveness is muted in. He has to play Pogba where he is most effective. Play Fred/Pereira alongside McT, with Pogba ahead of them. Instantly solves the Lingard problem and makes the team infinitely better.

The penalty debate has started again. Don’t understand why it’s rashford or Pogba when it quite clearly should and always be Martial who is our best finisher.

Pogba. McTominay and Fred as the two behind him. Take away all defensive responsibility. You don't see de Bruyne picking the ball up from his centre backs FFS. Or Pereira as ten. Or Mata, as a ten and not right bloody wing. Sanchez even.

Which is the point I'm making in regards to being overly critical of Ole just 3 games into the new season. Pogba is Pogba and Fred and Pereira are regularly claimed to be not good enough by plenty on here, there's no guarantees we're better. I think we would be if we simply swapped Lingard for Pereira but doesn't mean I'm right.
The midfield and #10 positions are seriously lacking. Whichever combination you put in there that doesn't include Lingard, you're simply hoping it will produce better results. What we needed to do was sell Lingard to Burnley and buy a world class replacement as well as improving the midfield. That is the only way we guarantee better results and performances from that area of the pitch.

It does solve it because Lingard wouldn't be playing.

I did the day trip from Belfast to Manchester yesterday for the first time is ages to watch that shit show. First half it was obvious we had literally nothing through the middle of the pitch, one dimensional with not one player willing to drive with the ball. The time to change it was half time, even bringing Greenwood in 10/15mins into the second half was the wrong substitution. It was a game crying out for someone to unlock a well organised Palace side and to leave it til the 85th minute to bring Mata on was criminal.
Like most fans I back Ole but if United had left making a decision til the end of last season, I’d have also been happy to see him go and a more experienced manager come in. He’s not to blame for the joke we are in the transfer window but he does prepare and pick the team.
How long do we continue to back him? If in another 6 or 7 games we only pick up another handful of points, where does that leave us? The club is in serious danger of bottom half of the table obscurity, a top manager would certainly get more out of this squad than what we are currently seeing imho.

I'm getting drawn into a conversation about Lingard here. I don't like him, I don't think he's good enough and I don't want to see him start. The point I'm making is that we've played 3 games, Lingard has been shit in 2 of them and got taken off before the 60 minute mark in one of them. The criticism of Ole playing him too much seems premature and a little over the top for my money.

What top manager is going to want anything to do with us now? Honestly? Managers aren’t stupid, they talk and the word has to be out- Utd are poison at present.

The next game is the key. If Ole drops him, great. If he doesn’t then he’s blind.

Agreed mate, this is the quandary we are in. Sack Ole we are in a worse position, stick with him and these results continue its equally as bad.

I'm with you, there's always been a player on here that id x or y manger replaces we'll be better and if he doesn't he can do one. It rarely amounts to shit because as bad as Lingard is, so is everyone else. Personally I'd put Gomes in because his potential far outweighs Lingard but we'd still get results like these.
