Lindelof had a good game. But it doesn’t really matter when he does that at the end.

If he had subbed on Fred and McTominay at half time we would have been more likely to control the midfield, meaning it never got to the point of the disgraceful last 20 minutes. We might have even created a third too. Lindelof should have done better for the goal. I thought he was one of our best players today before that but it was a terrible error. Maybe. You could also argue that if Romeu was sent off, as he should have been, we would probably have won easily too. But it was a defensive cock up that conceded again. Not subs. Yep, Romeu decision was a head-scratcher. Probably would have killed the game. VAR is a total mess. Have said before CB is my second priority this summer behind Sancho. We definitely need to improve there - Lindelof is inconsistent and Maguire doesn't have another level in him IMO, which is what we need.

I have some sympathy for Ole. I think he knows he needs to freshen up the team but the performance of the ‘reserves’ against Norwich was dreadful so he probably can risk it. He has a very difficult couple of selections coming up and as disappointing as it might be he may need to rest players for the Cup game. Because he won’t be able to go same again 3 times in a row. They’re already looking shattered. All fair points - but the players who IMO should have been subbed on, McTominay and Fred, have both proven themselves this season to be exempt from the dross rating given to most of our reserves. They both deserve trust still. If it were, say, Maguire and Lindelof struggling I'd agree that there were no options off the bench. But he Fred and McTominay are legitimate options that could and should have been brought on much earlier. I’ve said frequently that I don’t think there’s any real drop off between Matic and Fred. So to me the changes he should be able to make are in the forwards. But he can’t really because Ighalo and James are just 15 minute cameos, in an ideal world.

Fucking Maguire. Wouldn't make the bench in our 2008 side. Fucking £80m for a mostly solid player. Twat. (He's giving the post-match interview hence my ire being directed at him.) Actually wouldn't as well, that's the thing. Wonder if we appreciated just how lucky we were to have peak Rio, peak Vidic, and emerging Pique and Evans in the squad at the same time. Shows the poor standard of current defending in the whole league that Maguire is one of the best centre halfs in the league, but he'd literally be 5th choice at United just 12 years ago.

Linden of had a good game. But it doesn’t really matter when he does that at the end. Thought he was arguably our second best player (behind Martial) before the end!

I think the energy of Fred and McTominay, compared to the lumbering Matic and careless Pogba, was the key change we needed. Agree that, if the forwards are the issue, Ole has very little he can do.

Chelsea won't beat Liverpool in last game. if we win next 2 games were in champions league.
Worry is chelsea in the FA Cup can see us getting knocked out
Bad day at office for quite a few players today but Wan basaka has regressed so badly he gets in so many decent positions to cross then fucks it up. As for his defending its not a patch on what he's capable of

Also- just buy Ward Prowse. We don’t even need to play him, he can go on loan. Whatever the fee is we’d make it back in points gained.

Looking at it again it looked like Lindelof got a touch on it and helped it in, possible own goal? Just disastrous concentration levels, especially from a corner at the death. Really disappointing. Given the situation in both the game and the league, it’s absolutely dreadful. You should be prepared to throw yourself in front of a bus in that last moment, to die for your team. To be out muscled like that is completely unacceptable.

Being blunt, we gifted them both goals.
Lindelof had to go full Vida with that corner and head into next week

Lindelof had a good game. But it doesn’t really matter when he does that at the end. Lindelof does read the game quite well and he brings it out from the back no problem, he’s generally accurate passing it - but I sometimes get the impression that he can be bullied once it gets delivered into the box. This just highlights how much we need another Vidic type of defender to play alongside Maguire - a stellar type of centre back but they seem incredibly hard to come by. If we do try and address a partner for Maguire it’s going to be really interesting to see who we target.

Honestly, I think it's more likely that Lindelof reaches the required level for a title challenge than Maguire. Feels like his peaks are better, but then he goes and does something incredibly stupid - which can hopefully be ironed out. That said, he's 26 this week. He's not young even for a CB. He absolutely needs to crack on next season. And I hope he feels fucking ashamed because he has made an absolutely dreadful mistake at the death tonight.
