He's a Brazilian Robbie Savage. He works his socks off, covers a lot of ground and hassles opponents. When he does this it's enough to say he's been outstanding, or immense. Has he though? Paul Scholes used to put in outstanding performances. Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, even Paul Ince would be immense. Go watch them and then watch Fred and ask if those words should really be used to describe a single performance from him. I think you're right. It's a reduction in expectation and quality that forces us to think what we're seeing is better than it actually is. We praise Fred because he works hard and puts in a challenge. We've been that shit over the last 7 years, full of guys not giving everything, that any guy who at least shows some semblance of effort gets praise. The same has happened with Dan James recently, I've been guilty of it. Always thought he wasn't even average, gets a run of games in the first team and runs about and I end up thinking he could be a squad player. He's so painfully far off that I'm embarrassed that was all it took to make me even question what he could offer us. Think McTominay offers a bit more. Can score a goal, he's more combative and think he can often set the tone for our performance with his pressing. But in an ideal world he's not a regular starter either. There’s a case for Mctommers being in and out the team as a squad option or maybe even Fred but not both.one of them needs fucking off along with James, matic, martial and more. id keep mctommers and move Fred on as he’s just not good enough.

McTominay reminds me of Fletcher at a similar age. Right now, for the level we should be (not the level we are), he should be a squad player getting plenty of minutes through rotation - but he has the potential to go further and become a regular starter in a title-winning side.

Yeah the McFred combination may paper over some of the cracks but it makes us far too reliant on Bruno and Rashford to make things happen higher up the pitch and there is a lot of redundancy especially against weaker teams. And of course it has tricked us into thinking that Fred is a lot better than he really is.
It would make a massive difference if we brought in a quality defensive midfielder and played Pogba and Bruno ahead of him and gave Pogba a lot more freedom to get forward. That and a right winger and a pacy centre back and we'd be a massively improved team.

Right now we are -
A couple of decent keepers. Two excellent full backs (albeit with one poor at attacking) Two very good wide players in Rashford and Greenwood Bruno
The rest are just a bunch of guys, who you could realistically interchange with players from Arsenal, Villa, Everton and the like and not miss a beat really.
So in reality, and this is just my opinion, we have 6 players who could win you titles or go close. But the other positions, which make up have the bloody side, are mid-table, maybe pushing for Europa league spots. And that’s why we won’t do anything significant in the league for some time. You might be able to carry 2 or at most 3 players like that but half a team? No chance.

Fletcher was vastly better than McT imo. McT has a good passing game, good vision and an eye for goal. He however doesn't have the ball retention, awareness and the sheer stamina and force of will that Fletch had.

For me a football team depends on its spine. Striker - central midfielder - central defender. If this is solid, usually a good team gets by without world class wingers and fullback.
We have the accoutrements as Stewart mentioned, but zero spine. Making us largely rubbish.

I suppose you could argue we’ve tried to get the spine fixed but we’ve largely failed. Back to the drawing board. That is if Woodward hasn’t sold the drawing board to some coffee makers or wine merchants.

I have no clue if someone actually sat down with him and discussed this, or if he pulled the trigger on his own. To watch Maguire go for that and then Upamecano move to Bayern for half that price is aneurysm-inducing.

He was available at exactly the same time for almost exactly half the price. He wasn't unknown, half this board thought he should be our top target or close to it. And we just let him go to City and predictably instantly become the best defender in the league.
