Even with a reliable back line I don't think we could move to one DM because we do not have anyone capable of doing that job as a result of years of lopsided and crappy recruitment.

We need to sort the defence because having a reliable back line means (theoretically - Ole doesn't have the bollocks for it) we can move to one DM. Currently the perfect excuse for the McTominay and Fred partnership is our porous defence. this, This, THIS! Get a centre half that doesn't need two midfielders in front of it and we may see a side that doesn't get overrun in midfield and Fernandes can stay in his position, not tracking back making tackles. It is so blindingly obvious, it is painful to see that pairing having to play nearly every week. If only Matic was five years younger. I think it's an either or. A top class DM means we wouldn't be so bad defensively, Huth and Morgan were both an absolute shower, they looked solid because Kante did 90% of their work for them. Rio and Vidic were so good, they didn't need a sitting DM, Carrick and Scholes sat deep of course but they weren't Kante-esque players at all. Get a worldie centre back in and you don't need a great DM, other side of the same coin, get a worldie DM in and you could get away with the current centre back's, in my opinion.

Absolutely bizarre that Herrera was allowed to leave without much of a fight but McFred to start practically every match. Talk about a downgrade.

Don’t quote me on it but when Ander left didn’t he say he had a disagreement with Ed and the board, something like that? What the actual circumstances were I’m not sure, can’t remember completely but it was to that effect.

McTominay does the same job

We all loved Herrera . but lets not pretend he is much better than Scott of Fred. He needed to be let go.

Herrera went to PSG to earn close to £300k a week. Even if we hadn't left his renewal until 2 weeks before the end of the season, he still would've left, because we would've rightly told him to do one at that wage.

It's like, on one hand you are complaining about Fred and on the other you are saying that we should have massively overpaid for Herrera? Who is essentially the same as McTominay and Fred and is much older than both of them? Bewildering.

Agree that it was the right decision to let Herrera go with Scotty coming through. The money he was asking for a squad rotation player was ridiculous.
The real mistakes were 1) Splashing £50M+ on Fred 2) Failing to buy a proper replacement for Matic McFred is a direct consequence of those two mistakes.

I think Herrera said, or a source close to him said, that he would have renewed for certain but Woodward didn’t even bother instigating talks until it was too late.

pretty sure herrera in the end was a money issue, he felt he was our best midfielder and a big fan favourite thus wanted 300k. Simply put he is not a 300k a week player, no thank you.
Pay him that and pogba will want 500k a week, rashfords agent would have asked for 350k a week and the list goes on,

We absolutely should not have paid Herrera that type of money but he was our best midfielder and in my opinion far better than Scott or Fred in terms of technical ability and footballing brains.

It’s becoming a habit that these midfielders are leaving for more money. Almost like the club might be trimming the wage bill and telling everyone a few porkies about why players might be leaving.
The same thing is happening with Pogba now.

The same thing is happening with Pogba now. Nothing wrong in trimming the wage bill. We need to be smart on where to splash money and where not to. Like someone already said, give herrera (squad player at best) his ridiculous wage and next thing every single agent use that as the new base. Then there is the issue of being unable to shift our deadwood because guess what - they are on unrealistic wages and small clubs who wants to buy them cant afford it.
