Makes you realize how bloody good Varane is. Last season he made Martinez and Lindelof look good and both have been shakier this season without him. Tonight he even got Maguire through a game without fucking up. Evans has also done a good job providing some leadership to our defence and slotted in seamlessly when he came on for Varane last night and was arguably MOTM against Burnley.
Great debut for Amrabat and he could be just what the doctor ordered and help us extend Casemiro's lifespan.
Mount and Garnacho were also very impressive. And interesting that we delivered our best team performance without Bruno and Rashford. Neither should be automatic starters (although Bruno by virtue of being captain probably will be). But Mount and Garnacho are more than capable deputies.
Also fantastic to score 3 goals without Rashford or Hojlund. Amazing that Casemiro is on four goals already and if Garnacho is given enough game time he can easily hit double figures. And while everyone loves to hate on Martial there is no denying that when he is fit and switched on he is a very good player so it probably was the right decision keeping him especially with Hojlund's youth and back problems. Hopefully our medical staff can do a better job of keeping him fit and available so we can rotate him and Hojlund.
But I think the main takeaway from tonight is the importance of playing as a team. If everyone puts in a good performance and follows instructions and shows 100% commitment and effort you do not need world class players in every position or a full strength team or a 30 goal a season striker to get results. Especially with a coach the calibre of Erik.
And with the arrival of players like Amrabat, Mount, Hojlund, Evans and players like Hannibal, Pellistri, Garnacho, Mainoo etc coming through the ranks there should be healthy competition for places. But very important that Erik doesn't play favourites and makes it clear that if a player doesn't follow instructions, doesn't play for the team and doesn't show 100% commitment he risks being dropped. Those are the kind of incentives that could turn things around.
But of course we were at home and it was a cup game and Crystal Palace didn't play particularly well or adapt well to our tactics and one performance doesn't make a season. But after our terrible start to the season the last two games are something we can definitely build on and we can still go far in the cups and make top 4.

there was this one moment in the 2nd half, when garnacho lost the ball when he tried to dribble past a defender, ended up on the ground and it looked like he was sulking for a second. only to get up and chase it back. loved that from him.
garnacho, pellistri and amrabat bring some much needed energy to the team.
this was also one of the first games garnacho started and actually played well

Obvious argument against will be 'its just Palace'. Or it maybe that the midfield of Case and Amrabet is improving the overall play. I will need a bigger sample size to make any conclusion there ! |

Not sure last night was anything to do with either of them not being there but more so, one of those rare occasions where you couldn't pick a player that didn't perform well or contribute to a decent team performance,every player contributed. Tactically ETH got it right also. Even Maguire had a good game. |

Saw similar comments from few others on net too ,not claiming anything, just thinking out aloud. I even gave two reasons why i think it could have happened in the same post (Palace and Amrabet slotting in the midfield). |
