Erik may be a good coach. But man management is a huge part of this role and he doesn’t seem to be able to motivate the players or get them to understand what he wants from them. Also he may talk tough and be ruthless with players like Maguire, Ronaldo, Dave and Sancho. But we’ve got a lot of players underperforming and keeping their place in the team even though we do have more options on the bench this season. The defensive crisis is unfortunate but any good coach should be able to organise a makeshift defence and playing amrabat as a left back is stupid and he’s been a massive weak link. As has been discussed on here we could have played Evans or dalot at left back we could have played five at the back. It isn’t as if we have been playing top tier opposition. But under Erik we just look far too fragile and anytime we’re not at full strength I worry whether we’ll be able to get a result. He's been at United a minute, the biggest club of his career. I would argue the type of authority we're yearning for is built over time, through repeatedly and wholeheartedly backing the manager over and over. He could have won two trophies with United in his first season, and took United from 6th to 3rd. He has earned some degree of partisan support. Look at Arteta's first few seasons at Arsenal. We've not exactly been at full strength at the back this season whilst trying to bed in a new GK + style of play.

I 100% agree with you because this has been a process and in a lot of aspect still is. There is a lot of harping on the signings not working out.... which at this point is 3, Weghourst, Onana and Antony. Not every signing is going to pan out or hit the ground running immediately. Mount seems to turn it around quickly, Amrabat despite not playing a single match in his preferred position has been good, Malacia has been injured more than healthy but wasn't horrible when playing, and Casemiro is world class.

Agree he deserves time as he has won a trophy for us already and there is a learning curve for him and we knew that when we hired him over a more obvious choice like Pochettino who'd already had experience in the Premier League and with a big club at PSG.
But he seems to be falling into the same trap of previous managers of trusting underperforming players too much and not shaking things up and making changes before it is too late and everyone has downed tools. For example Amrabat at left back isn't going to work so he needs to find a viable alternative (Evans and Dalot are options with Lindelof moving over to RB). Casemiro isn't providing defence with much protection this year as a number 6 so we need Amrabat in midfield asap. And maybe we need to play five at the back for a while. And maybe we need to rotate Bruno and Mount to improve the team balance and continue to make use of Hannibal's energy. Eventually something will click and then we can build some form and try to make it until the end of the year without losing too much ground and by then we should get most of our defence back and our new signings wlll be fully bedded in.

Agree with much of what you say here, and after a decade I'm realistic enough to just wait and see.
I like Ten Hag, I think he has something about him that could be a perfect long-term fit at United.
