With a transfer chief and a qualified DOF then Erik would have had to justify his transfer targets and also been forced to consider alternative targets presented to him. There would have also been discussions of the profile of player that was needed that would have ensured better prioritisation of funds. To some extent it would have also overcome the clear bias Erik has towards players he has formerly coached or is familiar with from the Dutch league. It would have resulted in better accountability and a better result than handing over almost £400m to someone in his first job. Even at Ajax they had a very good recruitment system overseen by Van der Sar that cast a much wider net than the Dutch league.
But agree that on the pitch Erik needs to take some of the blame. The onus is on him to use the resources at his disposal (especially given he signed most of them) and come up with a clear and understandable system and tactics and gameplan that the players can follow. And I am seeing little evidence of that. I do not think the players have downed tools. They just look a bit lost and confused and frustrated. And it reminds me a little bit of the LVG days when LVG was also mouthing off about his philosophy and system but the football we were seeing on the pitch was equally crap.
If you have unlimited funds and a great structure the way Manchester City do then you can indulge a manager with a lofty philosophy and help them achieve their dream of playing beautiful football. But at a club like ours we need to be a lot more pragmatic and find a way to play effective winning football with the players we have.

If SJR appoints a new DOF,i'd suggest it should be a new manager also. No point in having a new DOF if the manager still influences transfers which is what ETH signed up to for. We need a DOF with a clear plan of how we play & what players need to be signed to give the manager & coaching staff the best chance within the system. Give us some managerial names? Not trying to be funny but we all are good at identifying issues, let’s also throw in some solutions. ETH signed up to have a say, a strong say and I don’t have an issue with that. If he is presented with the right options then whichever one he picks should be fine The right manager would be a manager aligned with what the a new DOF but naming a manager before a new DOF is putting the Tofu before the Soya Bean.

So you are telling me that ETH would not be speaking to the DOF before they come in thus they both are clear on the needs and plan ahead? Or you don't have any suggestions in regards to a managerial candidate, which would be fair enough as 99% of us don't have any viable ideas as the best options for the complete mess of a club we are, are managing our rivals

ETH may not be the man that the new DOF wants or thinks he can work with. Clearly whatever the style of play is at the moment,it's a mess & the recruitment is significantly contributing to that along with coaching & in game management, just appointing a new DOF & hoping he can work with ETH is not the answer.

Ok, I get what you mean. TBH unless this team stinks out the place between now and January 1st, ETH is going nowhere. The DOF will simply be told to work with him, ETH will likely be told in no uncertain terms that he will be better supported but he will not be dictating transfers at all costs as has been the case. That for me is the sensible approach. Tell us what you need and we will comeback to you with multiple options, take your pick. We cannot have any manager being allowed to tell us to go get a player at any cost ala Antony. I get if we do it as a one off, off the back of a manager winning galore over a 5 year period but the Antony stuff was a complete disgrace. Casemiro irrespective of what he brought to us last season was a short sighted move, from what we have all seen thus far this season it's a move that will cost us massively, hoping he turns it around but in anycase 3 year contract at £350k a week and fat transfer fee was just silly we simply pander to managers, Ole got Sancho and for the life of me I don't understand why we did not ask him where he preferred to play before shelling out the money we paid. For us to ask the basic question after we got him was madness.

The focus should be on getting in the best DOF and transfer chief available and start planning for the summer. And Erik will need to learn to work with them just as any other professional would with his superiors. He's worked under a proper structure at Ajax so I don't think it would be an issue. And it would relieve some of the pressure on him. He can give the blueprint of the profile of players he needs and how he wants to play and the DOF and transfer chief can line up potential targets and discuss them with Erik in the summer.

You may be right there but what we are seeing from a performance perspective ain't great & is down to the manager & his staff. One area we are getting repeatedly wrong is hiring a manager & letting him dictate style of play & signings, hence rebuild, after rebuild, after rebuild.

Lots of well structured clubs recruit managers to fit within the existing framework of playing staff they have available.

The rebuild after rebuild is because we consistently sign shit players or players past their prime. Good players can adapt to different managers and different systems so we shouldn't be in a situation where each new manager spends £400m over 2-3 years and leaves us no better off than we were before they joined.

I agree but also players the next manager doesn't want.

Agree that this season a decision needs to be made whether Erik is the right long term choice. But a competent DOF would help us make the right decision. Neither the Glazers, Sir Jim, Murtough or Fletcher are going to get that decision right. And the consideration should extend beyond a knee-jerk reaction to recent results or an automatic sacking when we fail to finish in the top 4 and include Erik's vision, the steps he is taking to implement that vision, and why it is not being translated this season into good performances and good results.

He has to make top 4 as a minimum requirement for me.

Failure to reach CL will get him the chop at the end of the day anyway.
