Sweet gardening leave deal for Dan though I doubt Dan thinks about it that way. He doesn't seem to be the kind to enjoy doing nothing.

There's no way SJR + co will wait until 2026 for him to start given their current rate of knots to get things sorted. Newcastle probably know that there's a massive risk for them operationally as they will also want certainty and he's probably sat on a treasure trove of info. They will undoubtedly settle, probably sooner rather than later.

What makes football so different from other employers when it comes to employment law? I get if he's headhunted etc, Newcastle will want to make sure he's not doing a Kenyon, but what's stopping him handing in his notice and doing gardening leave til the end of the season?

Senior/director level contracts are commonly more onerous and often include anti-compete clauses that run for 12 months.
I've not come across a two year clause before, but Ashworth is a big boy and able to pay for the best legal advice. He didn't have to sign the contract.
If Ashworth wanted a court to release him from the contract he'd have to establish that the clause was unreasonable because it prevented him from 'plying his trade'. Given that he presumably has a lot of money, that won't be easy.
So I think Newcastle hold more cards than Utd.
I suspect the £20m figure is an attempt by Newcastle to anchor the negotiation, and I would predict a settlement around £12m with a start date after the end of the season.

just shows how small time Newcastle are though and it doesnt make it an exciting proposition for their future candidates if they are then held to ransom.
they done the exact same thing to Brighton so they cant complain one bit.

Finally someone with actual skin in the game for this club saying what supporters have been saying for a decade.....breath of fresh air coming out from the guy most of us in here didn't want to own the club including myself. Chemical Jim about to flush the stench that has plagued this club for far too long.

Has an interview on the United website.
Building a new stadium is what they are currently looking at and Carrington may remain.

God it’s refreshing to have ambition in the boardroom for the first time in nearly 20 years. SJR has said and done more in 1 month than those twats in Florida have done since 2005. it’s totally the opposite of what we are used to. I am going to the game Saturday and will leave my green and gold scarf at home(even though we are not 100% there yet I think will treat myself to more traditional scarf).
