We have people like Ashworth coming in who are experienced with the data-driven "Moneyball" approach. And with FFP limitations a portion of our business should be bringing in cheap young talent that our coaching team can develop.
But yeah first order of business should be bringing in a CB and CM who are first team ready as well as a quality backup striker.
Then with whatever is left over we should be looking at cheap young defenders and midfielders to flesh out the squad.

There are things coming out today about Malacia suffering from both physical and mental issues. I mean, he's been out for so long and it's all a little bit bizarre. Hopefully it's not something awful.

honestly i dont mind it. before the season i wanted him sold as it was best for all parties. come the summer Eriksen & Casemiro will be gone and Amrabat loan ends. that leave McTomminay and Mainoo. maybe throw mount in there depending where you see him playing. Mctom offers a squad option and can play in any CM role (albeit limited in all areas) but he can score and works harder than anyone. to build a successful side we will need dependable players who want to play for the club. if he is a squad option behind Mainoo and 2 new signings im not against it

I do. Any cash helps with FFP and is pure profit. We’ve relied on him because we overlooked the forward contributions last summer. His overall game performance is 4/10 most games. Upgrade.

Upgrade. i dont think it is in any way realistic to upgrade all positions in the squad in the same window. and finding a better squad player than mctominay isnt as concerning as other positions. create a strong starting 11 and build from there, get squad players in. at least he is one who plays for the badge, works his balls off and doesnt complain when on the bench. a successful squad consists also of these types of players.

Scotty may be getting quite a bit of game time this season with our injury problems and his ability to score goals is helpful to the team when our forwards are misfiring. But he's not technically good enough to play in an Erik Ten Hag team and keeping him as an impact sub is a luxury we can't afford when FFP is constraining our ability to spend and as a youth product we could book the sale proceeds as pure profit.
The mistake we often make is we wait until squad players have become fringe players before we try to sell them and then their high wages (from multiple contract extensions) and time spend on the side lines means we can only get a few quid for them.
We know we need to raise significant funds from player sales this summer so we can spend £200-£300m this summer. So we should absolutely be considering squad players who might attract some interest.
Scotty's game time next season will be far more limited as Mount returns to full fitness and we buy a midfielder this summer to play alongside Mainoo. So better to sell him this summer when we can get maybe £40-50m for him than in a few seasons time when we might only get half or even a third of that especially once we put him on a fat new contract.
Still SJR is biased towards British so doesn't surprise me that giving Scotty a new contract is one of his first orders of business.

Last season we got two offers for £30m. One from West Ham that we rejected. The other from Fulham we accepted but it was too late in the window and Scotty refused the move. And that was after he spent most of the season rotting on the bench.
This season he's got a lot of gametime and already scored 7 Premier League goals many of them crucial. So not difficult to imagine his value has increased significantly.

Happy for McTominay to stay, we need players who are always available for the side + know what it means to play for the club (been at United for > 20 years).
Initially I felt he was at Tom Cleverley's level in terms of what he offers the team - I think now he'll end up somewhere between Fletcher and Carrick (Edit: actually nvm Carrick won loads and not sure we'll get there anytime soon) in terms of service + worth to the club. Could change if we start winning trophies again!
Has added a knack for goals this season, and if he can hit 8-10 every season that would do nicely.

If we keep Scotty we need to prioritise a defensively minded midfield. Scotty is more useful and less of a liability higher up the pitch which is where he plays for Scotland and scores goals for them too.

Pure slander Jokes aside, and ignoring Carrick (see Edit), he will likely go on to play more games for United than Fletcher. McT is 27, and could still get 30-40 games over 4/5 years for the club if he signs another contract. Fletcher made 342 appearances for United, scoring 24 goals. McT is on 243 appearances, and has already scored 28 goals. Might get to 350-400 games if he stays fit.

Well known for getting forward and banging them in. And hopefully he doesn't get anywhere close to 30-40 games a season for the next 4/5 years

Suppose I was more reflecting on my own views on Fletcher at United over time; I initially thought wasn't close to United quality, and he ended up sticking around and proving his worth in a big way.
The comparison is neither here nor there for me, tbh!
