The club only has themselves to blame for inflated fees. The damage Woodward and glazers have done to this club could last another few years.
Smaller clubs with good owners are scouting players well and making us pay the fees. That or the smaller clubs catch up because are squad is full of dead wood, still.
Ugarte another player that was spoken about on here, think the same time as Palinha and they went and pissed 70m on Casemiro.

Shaw has been inconsistent with injuries and Malacia is nowhere near good enough.
Why we weren’t scouting the like# of Kirkez is criminal.

On the topic of buying players before everyone knows how good they are - the Slovenian centre back number 6 looks very competent and combative.

Probably not a good sign that we are willing to get dragged into ANOTHER legal saga just to get our 3rd or 4th choice centre back target on the cheap.
Although I think in this case the rules are stupid. Even if we bought Todibo he'd be cup-tied if we faced Nice in the competition. And they can use the funds to replace him in the same way they would if they sold him to a third party. Of course we need to make sure we pay a transfer fee that is reasonably arms length but it isn't as though there are clubs queuing up to sign him and £20-£30m feels about right as there is no guarantee he can make the step up to the Premier League. And if we lose the legal case we can sign someone else so worth a try while we try to wear Everton down.
Ashworth thing is so stupid though. It is shaping up to be a challenging transfer window with our 1st choice targets likely too expensive as we struggle to sell players and stay compliant with FFP. So would be really nice to have someone with Ashworth's experience to marshal our resources and identify alternative targets and find the best value propositions to squeeze the most out of our budget.
Also as mentioned there are too many smaller English clubs bringing in talented youngsters and seeing their value double or treble after a year or so. Ashworth has been involved in that kind of process at Brighton so knows how it works so could bring that in over here. Erik has shown the ability to develop young players and Wilcox was heavily involved in the youth setup at City. So seems like a way forward for the club.

PSG signed Ugarte last year for 50 mill. He had a decent first season. According to reports, we just bid 25 million for him.
We are fucking skint.

Apparently they will sell for 50, but if we can get some middle ground for 40ish seems like good business rather then our usual shit show of over paying for every one.

Until then we can't risk an overspend which is probably why we aren't making much progress and making these stupid low-ball offers. And entering into another legal proceedings so Todibo might become an option if we cannot negotiate down the price for other targets. Unfortunately player sales don't seem to be going to well. We can't seem to get £40m for Greenwood. Lazio offered £20m. Valencia offered £25m. Juventus seem to prefer a cash plus player deal and sections of their fan base are voicing disapproval. Dortmund don't want Sancho on a permanent deal and no other takers. Saudis do not want to be the next China so are probably going to be a lot more cautious this window so offloading Casemiro might not be so easy and we might not get much for him. No one wants Donny. If we sell AWB we won't get much for him and need to add a full back to our shopping list. And so on. It is frustrating because if we landed Branthwaite, Ugarte, Zirzkee and Kerkez this summer it would be a very good summer and set us up nicely to get back into top 4 next season.

They need to buy names to cover the loss of Mbappe so need to sell some players. Ugarte isn’t a ‘name’ but he’s a bloody good player and perfect for what we need. Anyway, the likes of Bayern will no doubt come in and buy him for 50 mill in the course of an afternoon. Edit- PSG also want to sign Neves.

Ugarte and Zirzkee for a combined total of around £80m is fantastic value and would improve the squad immensely. We should get both deals done before someone else swoops in. And I think Everton probably will sell Branthwaite if we increase our offer to around £50m + add-ons. We have had multiple offers for Greenwood so should be able to get at least £30m for him which will balance the books. And then we can see who else we manage to sell and bring in a left-back and hopefully Todibo as well (ditching Lindelof to make room).

Reports saying we’ve cooled our interest in Onana and are focusing all our midfield energy on Ugarte.

I seen Bayern want him, think it was about 60m tbf Everton would want another 20 or so on top of that if we was to bid, if we can get ugarte for between 40-50 that's some brilliant business, him and kobbie in the middle would be absolutely solid.
