The Athletic saying we’ve accelerated the Berge interest now we’ve moved on for Ugarte. I remember him being tidy at Sheffield United, but ultimately he's been a decent player in two fairly awful sides. But that is such a step down from Ugarte, probably for not that much of a cheaper fee. Disappointing IMO. Burnley supposedly told fenerbache they want 25 million euro for the player.

throw in Hannibal to Burnley on a year long loan or as part of a swap. or Collyer and have him some first team experience in a good league

We were a fairly awful side a lot of the time last season. So I wouldn't rule Berge out just because he played for Burnley and Sheffield United. Especially as he may benefit from having better players around him.
He is a defensive midfielder, Premier League tested, rarely injured (he played 37 Premier League games last season!), comfortable on the ball, physically imposing and has leadership qualities. And we are so light in defensive midfield that even if we upgrade him next summer he will still be a useful squad player to have.
PSG want £50m for Ugarte. Bayern want £40m for De Ligt. I suspect we don't have £90m left in our budget as progress on player sales has stalled (and there is even talk that AWB is demanding a pay-off to leave). And INEOS probably figure that caving is a sign of weakness and will make future transfer windows more difficult. Erik reportedly also wants to keep Scotty and Fulham are still short of our valuation and last season Scotty turned them down late in the window so may well do the same.
So if we can scoop up Berge for £20-£25m then we can probably go a bit higher for De Ligt who has become more of a priority now that Yoro is injured and out probably for the rest of the year.
Although PSG have signed Neves now and got him for a very good price (£50m + about £10m add-ons) with Sanches going on loan to Benfica so maybe they can afford to be a bit generous and drop their fee a little. They also still have some interest in Sancho. And a Sancho-Ugarte straight swap makes a lot of sense. So good to have alternatives lined up but I think there is still a little bit of hope.

Berge is tidy enough from what I've seen and is the sort of profile we should be looking at (good under pressure for starters). If it was him + another at the expense of McTominay and Casemiro then I'd not be against it.

supposedly AWB wants a golden goodbye of £3 million. We want Westham to cough up that figure on top of the £18 million fee.
Not sure that will fly considering the guy is free in 12 months. best case we get an extra £1 - £1.5 million from them and then cough up the rest ourselves. It's like 3/4 months wages

25m for Sander Berge 😂 Fuck me we're starting to slope back to desperate already. Might aswell bring Fred back. i see it differently. a player with the correct profile and wouldnt break the bank. 25m for his age and experience isnt bad as you wouldnt loose it. would rather pay 15-20m but if we could throw a loan deal in their or a young player who isnt good enough for united it would be worth it. but its essentially pocket change for the club and the benefits would massively outweigh the negatives (overpaying by 5m) id rather us sign a player with the correct profile, than a big name that isnt right the side. it would allow us to finally crack on with de ligt

It's the fee for a player that's spent 2 out of the last 5 seasons in the championship and one in the relegation zone. As the window has gone, so has the standard of midfielder weve been linked with. It's the same as the last 2 windows, we eventually end up with a desperate signing that's well below the bar required. If he's the only midfielder we bring in can you honestly say he has what it takes to help us get top 4, because I don't and that's the minimum aim this season.

We signed Keane after he was relegated with Nottingham Forest. So I don't think it is necessarily a knock on Berge and he was easily their best player last season. And as we have seen ourselves when you are surrounded by mediocre players they can drag even good players down to their level.
And Mount joined us with excellent credentials having won the Champions League with Chelsea and was a favourite of Tuchel. But because he was the wrong profile of player and had developed a susceptibility to injuries he made no impact last season.
And a mistake we've been making is thinking that because players look good in the German and Dutch league or in the World Cup they can step up to the Premier League. So it gives me a bit of confidence that Berge is battle tested in the Premier League and held his own in pretty crap teams.

Gomes from Wolves seems to be the new target. He's an absolute pitbull of a DM, but he's very limited and Wolves are also taking the piss on asking price there too. I thought he would cost about 30-35 but apparently there asking for a similar amount as Ugarte.
