Edwin van der Sar produced a hat-trick of penalty saves to hand Manchester United victory over Chelsea in an entertaining Community Shield.
With the two sides tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, following goals from Ryan Giggs and Florent Malouda, Van der Sar saved from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips to give Wayne Rooney the honour of striking the winning kick following successful conversions from Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick.
The result is a mirror of the 1997/98 Shield when United won on penalties following a 1-1 draw, but it was Chelsea who began this year's curtain raiser the brightest and with Joe Cole, Malouda and Wright-Phillips forming the trademark Stamford Bridge front three it was unsurprising to see Jose Mourinho's side looking to forage down the flanks.
The Blues were without regular captain John Terry, following the news that the centre-back has been ruled out for up to a month with a knee problem, and Lampard, who was greatly restricted throughout, was handed the skipper's armband.
United appeared content with their own cagey opening and comfortably contained the light-weight Chelsea attack, which was missing Didier Drogba after the Ivory Coast striker was also ruled out through injury.
Indeed, it was United who had the first effort on target when Cristiano Ronaldo inevitably gave the Premier League Champions their impetus when he broke down the left on 20 minutes to feed Giggs, but the Welsh veteran's close range effort was excellently blocked by Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.
Chelsea then had their best effort when Michael Essien flicked on a Malouda free-kick, which just evaded John Obi Mikel, who would have comfortably headed home at the far post.
United, though, then began to discover the fluid attacking play which won them the title last season and on 35 minutes Giggs was able to atone for his earlier miss. Nemanja Vidic collected a poor free-kick from Ronaldo, who had blasted straight into the feet of the Chelsea wall, and found Patrice Evra on the left wing with a beautiful cross field ball.
Following a skilled one-two with Ronaldo, Evra then had time and space at the dead-ball line to pull back and find Giggs, who finished with control in a crowded penalty area.
Chelsea had lacked penetration, but on the stroke of half-time Malouda restored parity when the £13.5million summer signing from Lyon latched onto a deft through ball from Ashley Cole and showed strength and speed to shrug off Ferdinand to bravely prod past Van der Sar before he was clattered by the Dutch goalkeeper.
After the interval United appeared stung by the equaliser and immediately threatened when Evra again easily broke down the left to feed Ronaldo, but the winger's effort was well saved by Cech.
Chelsea introduced Pizarro as a replacement for Malouda, who was still struggling following his collision with Van der Sar, and United brought on Nani as the second-half became a more open affair, but clear cut goal chances remained at a premium.
Wright-Phillips and Ronaldo looked the most dangerous for the opposing sides, but neither were capable of conjuring a winner and penalties were to be required.
Van der Sar promptly produced his heroics and handed United the 3-0 penalty win.
Skysports
haha what? they are praising joe cole SWP and malouda? they didnt bring thathttp://republikofmanc.proboards92.com/index.cgi?action=calendar [Calendar] much of an threat...honestly before they have...but they where useless coming forward...it was only one free kick which became their finest opportunity, otherwise it was just malouda that fought luckily his way through and scored...but even though at times it seemed chelsea controlled the game it was wrong, because we saw as soon as they came forward united to the ball and attacked and were the greater threat, we have also seen teams like wigan etc that "controll" the game by holding on to the ball, but as soon as they come to united's half they loose the ball or they have to play it back and really cant do anything, many people get this "possession" thing wrong, having the ball doesnt mean u are dominating... and i dont see how SWP was THAT great, i mean many times he did brilliantly goes past one nearly comes to a cross but BOOM he is tackled clean...for the first time i have to say chelsea werent a threat, over the years we have seen them being quite the danger coming on attacks, but today they werent...and they wont be anymore as they have been for the past 2 years... UNITED!

Fergie Happy With WinSir Alex Ferguson was happy that Manchester United were almost ready to defend their Premier League title following his side's victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield. After an entertaining 1-1 draw at Wembley, Edwin van der Sar produced a hat-trick of saves to help Manchester United to a 3-0 win in the penalty shootout. "It was a difficult game," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "I think the heat played a part and I don't think either team is 100 per cent ready. "But it was satisfying to win and we can use it as a stepping stone to the big one next week." Ryan Giggs gave United the lead with a fine finish from Patrice Evra's cross, and Ferguson was impressed with the sharpness of the move. He explained: "The build-up to our goal was excellent and it was a marvellous finish. I think he placed it right in the top corner." Ferguson also reserved special praise for van der Sar, saying: "He was absolutely marvellous, and I think it was experience as well. "He was concentrating in case it went to penalties and it paid dividends." Wary of rivals United open their Premier League campaign against Reading next Sunday and Ferguson is hoping to be able to call on the summer recruits who did not feature against Chelsea. But Ferguson is also aware that it will be difficult for United to retain their title. "Everyone in the country knows who's going to be contesting it and I think Arsenal and Liverpool will play a bigger hand this season, which will be good for the league," he said. "But the most important thing is ourselves and this helps in a way. "Next week we'll hopefully have a stronger squad available. Hargreves, Nani and Anderson and Tevez will all play on Wednesday." Jose Proud Despite DefeatJose Mourinho paid tribute to his injury-hit Chelsea side following the Community Shield defeat to Manchester United. With John Terry and Didier Drogba among those ruled out prior to kick-off Mourinho had to field a makeshift side, including a front line that comprised Florent Malouda, Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips. The Blues managed to hold United to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and, though they lost on penalties, Mourinho insists he was proud of his players. "I couldn't be happier with this group of players, a group that was not prepared to play this game and only knew last night they would have to play in this team and with this strategy," the Chelsea boss told Sky Sports. "I think they did very well. We know our limitations but I think we controlled the game and had our chances to score. "I don't think the boys deserved to lose on penalties but that is football. "The season starts really on Saturday, and we have a great group working together. Mourinho also confirmed that a number of players picked up new injuries during the match at Wembley. "At half-time I had four injured players in Petr Cech, Glen Johnson, Florent Malouda and Shaun Wright-Phillips," he explained. "The team had a lot of problems before the game and a lot of problems during, but the answer was very positive."

Mourihno also said that it wasn't really a defeat because it was on penalties. Well thats a relief then. So AC Milan drew the Champions league in 2005, England didn't get knocked out of Euro 2006 by Portugal.......
